GOP rep: Trump did not make a 'good deal' on debt ceiling

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 09/10/17 09:55 AM EDT

A House Republican said Sunday that he does not think President Trump’s agreement with Democratic leadership to raise the debt ceiling was “a good deal.”

“No I don’t think this was a good deal for the American taxpayer,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told “Fox News Sunday.” “We didn’t do anything to address the underlying 20 trillion debt problem.”

Jordan’s comments come after Trump last week struck a deal with Democrats to fund the government for three months, raise the debt ceiling, and provide aid to regions hit by Hurricane Harvey. The agreement, after minimal negotiation, surprised many Republicans. Jordan, a co-founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, said he doesn’t focus on whether or not the deal is good for Democratic leadership.

“I don’t think it’s good for the American taxpayer. I don’t think it’s good for the American people,” he said.
