Democrats Not Ready To Impeach Trump Though He Has Done 'Really Terrible Things'

BY LINLEY SANDERS ON 9/27/17 AT 9:00 AM

President Donald Trump has done “really terrible things,” but that doesn't mean top Democrats are ready to push impeachment, according to a senior lawmaker.

“We’re not there yet” on impeachment, said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, though he quickly added that the president has done “really terrible things.”

“I don’t want to vote on impeachment. I think it’s too early. We don’t have the evidence; we don’t have the case,” Nadler told The Hill. “You don’t want to discredit it by voting for impeachment resolutions before you have the facts."

Top lawmakers fear the motion would look like an overreach from the minority party and undermine the justification for possible efforts in the future. The House Judiciary Committee would hold hearings before any committee vote on impeachment, which would then go to the full House.

It's good to hear a voice of reason. Without being able to make a solid case, and without having solid evidence, any effort to barrel-through with impeachment is doomed to fail. It would be for vanity purposes or rallying purposes only. And a failed attempt now, would in my opinion, diminish our chances later on (no matter what evidence we had, or how solid the case against him was). People would view it as another political stunt or grandstanding or showboating.

It is a political decision.

He is dangerous for our democracy and a threat to the world. How much more proof do you need of that?

You're right, it's a political decision. So one must play politics. The reasoning is clearly set out in the opening post.

How much proof do we need? We need enough proof to make it politically impossible for a sufficient number of Republicans in the House to vote against impeachment. If it came up for a vote now, we would lose straight across party lines.

That's just the facts of life.

We are getting to a tipping point not just here in U.S., but he is going to get us into a shooting war with someone to prove his "manhood".

and then start putting bills on the presidents desk. He'd sign just about anything. It's been proven in the past. If he doesn't sign their bills, then they'd release the impeachment *storm.
