Union: Minntac layoffs fewer than initially expected
Source: Duluth Tribune
Union officials announced Tuesday that they've been told that the number of workers to be laid off at U.S. Steel's Minntac taconite facility in Mountain Iron next month will be significantly fewer than initially projected.
In a statement posted on the United Steelworkers Local 1938 website, vice president John Arbogast said the union was told by company officials "that the number of employees being affected by the layoff will be reduced from nearly 700 to approximately 400." That's because of a 32-hour work week being implemented for at least some workers, along with planned maintenance projects.
The company and the union finalized a "layoff minimization plan" on Tuesday, Arbogast reported. They're scheduled to meet again on Friday, when the union expects to receive more details on layoffs by department.
