Secretary of Defense: F-22 Production Doesn't Need to Be Revived

The United States shouldnt spend its resources reviving production of the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said at a press conference at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. on May 12.
Congress released legislation in April to encourage the Air Force to resume production of the Lockheed Martin F-22, which was cancelled in 2012 by the Secretary of Defense at the time, Robert Gates.
Carter argued that producing F-22s would siphon money away from other programs, and that the military is committed to upgrading the F-22s that they already have. The original order of F-22s included only 187 aircraft, far fewer than the 749 included in the original requirement.
At the time that the Raptor was cancelled, Gates argued that it wasnt necessary to pour more money into a high-tech aircraft when the United States was fighting primarily against insurgents using less advanced technology in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House hopes that reviving and modernizing the F-22 could ensure American technological superiority over high-tech countries like China and Russia.

(3,072 posts)... been in some fact fights in google F-35 group. Every aviation buff I know, some retired professional and former military pilots, flight directors, say it is junk. And have for years. It reminds me of the Johnny Cash song, One Piece at a Time:

(958 posts)As a mature program, the main players have moved on to other defense contracts and are involved in other high priority programs.
The absolute highest, most important, program is filling the F-35 hole up with money. Until that hole gets filled, nothing else matters.
