Five soldiers have died and four others are missing after a military vehicle was swept away by fast-moving flood waters Thursday at Fort Hood.

Three of the soldiers were found dead shortly after a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle overturned at about 11:30 a.m. at the Owl Creek Tactical low-water crossing and East Range Road during a training exercise. Two more bodies were found late Thursday night, according to a Fort Hood statement.

Three other soldiers were rescued from the water near the vehicle and are in stable condition at Coryell Memorial Healthcare System in Gatesville.

Army officials planned a briefing early Friday to provide an update.

I wonder how deep the water was?

I hope they find some survivors hanging onto trees in the middle of the flood zone. I am afraid they would have found them by now though.

Damn!

the water was so high and fast the driver lost sight of the roadway and the front wheel went over the edge of something like this.

Though it doesn't even have to be that high. So long as it's moving fast and there's a lot of water volume going by, that water will move vehicles even larger than that.

The phrase "Turn Around, Don't Drown" isn't just a cute-sounding saying. It is important to understand what can happen in a flash flood. All it takes is about a foot of water in depth to be able to move a vehicle sideways. Vehicle loses traction, starts to float a little bit, and the next thing you know, your vehicle has been flipped.

Water is relentless.

At least two dozen streets were closed, including a stretch of Interstate 35 in San Antonio early Thursday. At least two high water rescues were conducted, one near Lackland Air Force Base, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rain was falling at a rate of up to 3 inches per hour, said weather.com meteorologist Jonathan Erdman, leading to more flash flooding.
