Republicans Seek Wider FBI Surveillance Power After Orlando

Source: Bloomberg

Senate Republicans are planning a renewed push in the wake of the Orlando massacre to expand the FBI’s warrantless surveillance powers in terrorism investigations.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, pointed to a longstanding request by the FBI to expand the scope of electronic records -- such as web browsing history -- agents could sweep up from companies in terrorism investigations without obtaining a court order.

"They could go and get additional information, like metadata, who he’s e-mailing, the websites he’s accessing. Not content," Cornyn told reporters Monday.

The fatal mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, has the potential to shift the battle lines over surveillance. Many Democrats and some conservative Republicans had been leery of granting additional authority to law enforcement to access technology without court involvement, but the rise of "lone-wolf" terrorist attacks in the U.S. could change the political calculus.

assault weapons (AR15 and AK47)for starters - then maybe we can talk - until then - your priorities are a bit like putting the cart before the horse's arse...also - ban anyone on the NO Fly list from owning a gun - and then we might be able to talk - until then - DO YOUR JOB!

that you criticize politicians for supporting an unconstitutional expansion of the FBI's powers while promoting an unconstitutional ban on people on the no fly list owning guns. The irony is that both are wrong moves.

How about instead we work within the confines of the constitution and the rights contained therein, instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water?

have to do with the removal of due process?

You seem to be comfortable with removing peoples rights, is that a progressive value?

...we once did. Clyde Barrow was known for his M1918 BAR, you know. Did that erode our 2nd amendment rights? Is banning semi-auto assault weapons any different or should we go back to the days when criminals packed tommy guns?

It's not against the law to purchase or own automatic weapons.

I could by a fully automatic weapon tomorrow, you just have to pass a background check and pay a $200 Federal tax stamp.
