Senate to Vote Monday on Four Gun Control Measures

Senate to Vote Monday on Four Gun Control Measures

by Alex Moe, Alex Johnson and Hallie Jackson

The Senate will vote on four gun control measures Monday after being prodded by a 15-hour filibuster in the wake of the shooting massacre at a Florida nightclub.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, filed cloture motions Thursday on four gun-related amendments to a spending bill, a day after Democrats ended their filibuster to force some sort of action on gun restrictions.

"Cloture" is a parliamentary procedure that starts the clock on 30 hours of debate before a vote.

The amendments — two filed by Dianne Feinstein, D-California, and Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut ,and two other, less restrictive measures filed by Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and John Cornyn, R-Texas — would address background checks of prospective gun buyers and the sale of guns and explosives to people on terrorist watch lists.

The votes Monday would be a rarity in the Senate, where Republicans have blocked gun control measures for many years. They would need 60 votes to pass — more votes than there are Democrats in the Senate, meaning there's a very high hurdle to surmount.

But they're likely to be important symbolically after Democrats led by Chris Murphy of Connecticut took to the floor for 15 hours Wednesday to demand action after 49 people plus the gunman were killed Sunday at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

"I've had enough. I've had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocents, and I've had enough of inaction in this body," Murphy said during the filibuster Wednesday. Many of his Democratic colleagues took turns echoing his sentiments.

Murphy said Thursday on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports" that Democrats would "unleash a fury of advocacy on Republican congressional offices" over the weekend.

The National Rifle Association, meanwhile, warned its members this week that the measures would threaten the constitutional right to own firearms. .................

because Republicans. One or two who are in tight races may cross over, but I can't see the rest abandoning the trough at which they feed. Maybe one of the weaker Republican measures will pass in the hopes that they can ignore the issue for another 1 or 10 slaughters.

it means Democrats are being given a short leash, there is no time
for the general public to put pressure on their Senators

It will be over and forgotten by July 4

Republican senators in swing states are going on record.

If I was them, I'd say "Sure!" and send it to the House! Let Paul Ryan and company go on record!

There is nothing wrong with "No fly, no buy!" and "Background check for ALL gun sales!"

They know that even if their constituents support gun control and don't agree with the Senators' votes against it, they will still vote for the Repug candidates in the election rather than the Democrat. The Senators get a few more complaints than usual, but it will all blow over by the next time Kim Kardashian posts a nude photo.

but we're not among their voters...

When there is an election, I just can't imagine Republicans abandoning their Republican candidate for a Democrat because of gun control.

My teenager, not so much. I keep trying to explain to her that she has to follow this election because there has never, ever been anything like it. I mean, TRUMP?????? Just when you think the Repugs have gotten as insane and creepy as possible, they manage to go one step beyond. Compared to what we're seeing now, Nixon/Agnew is looking damn good, Saint Ronnie is a flaming liberal, Bush is reasonable, Cheney is still Darth Vader but at least he was consistent, not stupid, loves his gay daughter and doesn't talk about wanting to date her......dear god.......TRUMP????? Is there some new drug out there that no one is telling me about?

how God is going to abandon America because we don't hate gay people enough or whatever. If I were God, I would've given up on America the moment we decided that guns are more precious than human lives, and that the murder of of two dozen kindergarteners was nothing more than collateral damage.
