Judge Blocks Indiana Genetic Abnormality Abortion Law

Source: Associated Press

A federal judge blocked a new Indiana law Thursday that bans abortions sought because of a fetus' genetic abnormalities.

U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt granted a preliminary injunction sought by Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, which argued that the law was unconstitutional and violated women's privacy rights. The law was set to take effect Friday.

Indiana and North Dakota are the only states with laws that ban abortions sought due to fetal genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome, or because of the race, sex or ancestry of a fetus.

The lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana also challenges the law's provision requiring that aborted fetuses be buried or cremated. Planned Parenthood currently disposes remains by incineration, as with other medical tissue.

about my period?

He and his ilk also included miscarriages in that bill or one like it. A miscarriage would have to have been buried like a live birth that later dies. For grown men they sure seem concerned about our cycles.

It was clear to everyone from the beginning that this law was unconstitutional on its face. Yet, they proceeded with it anyway, held all kinds of hearings where people often gave gut-wrenching testimony about carrying such children to term and watching them suffer, but it passed anyway. That said, a lot of women legislators on both sides stood up on the House and Senate floors and denounced the bill, so revulsion about this did cross party lines.

What angers me is:

1) The state will now waste even more money challenging this in court, up to the Supreme Court if necessary, even though the Texas ruling is a huge clue as to how this would ultimately be decided.

2) The state will not offer much help -- if any -- to families who decide to raise babies/children who will face severe medical and developmental disabilities for most of their lives; yet, as I said, they will spend untold amounts litigating this further. What a surprise, eh, in a GOP-controlled, "Christian" state? No better example of pro-birtherism EVER.

3) Dimwit Pence and his jolly band of idiots in the General Assembly will only double down with shit like this going forward. You know, protecting the "sanctity" of life (but only until the delivery room) and all that. It's become a crusade with these assholes.

The Latest: Indiana governor disappointed by abortion ruling

Updated 3:34 pm, Thursday, June 30, 2016

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Latest on a judge blocking Indiana's law banning abortions sought because of a fetus' genetic abnormalities (all times local):

4:30 p.m.

Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's office says he is disappointed with a federal judge's decision to block a state law banning abortions sought because of a fetus' genetic abnormalities.

Pence spokeswoman Kara Brooks said Thursday that the governor "remains steadfast in his support for the unborn, especially those with disabilities."

She says Pence believes citizens should be allowed "to determine appropriate medical safety standards and procedures through their elected representatives."

acknowledge that women are more than a walking womb? That's about what they want to relegate us to. I'm quite a bit more than the sum of my ability to bear children.
