Jewish Teens Birthday Ruined As Friends Make Swastika Cupcakes

Source: Huff Post

An Arizona mother said she hopes cruel birthday cupcakes given to her teenage daughter will become a “teachable moment” about the horrors of the Holocaust.

Deborah Muller, of Paradise Valley, said her daughter’s 14th birthday party this month included cupcakes that guests were allowed to frost. Two girls, who Muller said are friends of her daughter, decorated cupcakes with chocolate swastikas, even though the birthday girl is Jewish, according to KPNX-TV.

Muller said in a now-deleted Facebook post that the girls told her they did it to “be funny.” She said the teens all recently learned about the Holocaust in school, and were aware of the symbol’s meaning.

The girls uploaded photos of the swastika cupcake to Snapchat, according to Phoenix New Times.

MY state of Arizona. Any DUer that gets butthurt when I slam another state's bullshit, remember: I'm from fucking Arizona!

Why don't these people do this to me? Is being 6'2", 245 lbs and being able to bench 385 really enough to keep these trump licking racist turds at arm's length? I know I am overseas now, but back in Arizona, no one dared try this with me.

Sometimes, gotta take the law into your own hands and defend yourself. My mother, the Mohawk, and my father, the Jew, taught me that. Or else you get your land stolen from you (my mother's people) and you get exterminated in camps (my father's people).

But I doubt white Christians will understand that.

Wed Nov 30, 2016, 12:23 AM
Nov 2016

According to the Mom:

The party involved one cupcake, not "cupcakes," as the Channel 12 story relates. That mistake was picked up by other news outlets. Channel 12 also tweeted that the teens had brought the "swastika cupcakes" to the party — an incorrect detail also duplicated in various stories. One Jewish news site dubbed the small gathering "A Swastika Filled Party."

But she says the story is essentially true, and that it justifies a "teaching moment."

"This is not a political thing," the mom says of her post. "This is the environment we live in."

She talked to the parents of the ten or so teens at the party to apologize for what had happened and to discuss it with them. The girl most responsible for the cupcake said she did to be "funny" and apologized.

Overblown or not. . .don't care. There is no place in civilized society for Nazis! And anyone who thinks otherwise, saying it is overblown, loses all respect for me.

After all, it was just one mosque that was defaced.
It was just one racist comment directed at the black one on the street
IT was just one Asian American told to go back to where they came from.
It was only one woman who was sexual harassed

I mention this because he built a whole film around a farcical musical comedy about Hitler and the Nazis. With chorus lines in the form of swastikas and everything. And he has worked Nazis as figures of fun into several of his other films.

In each case, he meant it as pure absurd comedy. Do you see it as such? Or do you think what he did was offensive and had the effect of "normalizing" antisemitism by making it merely a matter for ridicule instead of unalloyed horror?

It sounds as if the mother handled it correctly and I think those girls have a long way to go to learn about the atrocities of World War II. They need to watch "Night and Fog' or something. It is never surprising to see things like this, nor is it surprising to see people minimizing the situation, making excuses for it, or ignoring it all together. Given all the other issues of hate in the last few weeks, I am not, as I said, too terribly surprised.

They say "sacred cows make the best hamburgers" but for some, it seems they really enjoy the kosher ones to chow down on and make equivocations as to why it is "OK".

Thankfully, we have non-Jewish folks to 'splain to us why we are overreacting and telling us how we should and shouldn't respond.

When hate speech is afforded the protection of freedom of speech then being a Nazi becomes just another opinion, no different from what sports team one supports. It's pernicious and growing, it needs to be nipped in the bud. Back in the 1970s racist jokes were really funny too.

This is not another opinion, it's a hate crime and it needs to be treated as such before it escalates into something far worse.

What I would do is forbid my kid to associate with them. They are scum...maybe they will grow out of it maybe not...but I would not want my kid involved. I say this as the Grand-daughter of two Jewish Great-Grandparents who immigrated from Germany and became Lutherans...no idea why...maybe tired of the prejudice? Their families disowned them...years later my great-grands tried to get the family( before World WarII) into the US and failed. My branch of the family is the only one that survives...everyone in Germany died. When I realized as a young person what had happened and how my ancestors died, I was horrified. I have no patience with haters. They are dangerous.

I've been in exactly one physical fight in 30+ years. (I'm over 90, but in very fine physical shape.) I escaped Europe as a young man and served the USA Army in WWII as a translator for the military police. Most of my family was not so lucky.

I was attending a BBQ in the 1980s. Maybe the late 1970s. A man older than me, someone's grandfather, had mixed some sort of prescription drug with beer. He fell soundly asleep in an armchair in a quiet room.

A young asshole friend of my son drew a Hitler mustache on the man.

He thought himself quite witty and amusing and asked me if I was afraid of the mustache.

I beat him first with a wine bottle, then my fists. He went to the hospital. I broke a knuckle.

I was almost arrested, which would have been bad, but the cop had fought in Korea and remembered WWII rather vividly, so he decided I was provoked.

Not my finest moment, but I'd do it again.

that said.

My mom had two friends that were concentration camp survivors. They were my "Aunts". when I was very little, I asked my mom about the numbers on their arms.

She explained that a very bad man, years before I was born, tried to hurt my Aunts very badly.

From that moment, I tried to read more and more about the Holocaust.

Fast forward to when I was 21 and working as a clerk in a dept store.

An older woman came in, grandmotherly type. she was really sweet. She was returning something that was past the return date (this was the old days). I was really sorry and hated our return policy because it was clear that there was something wrong with the item. I apologized. she could see I felt really bad. when she reached for her item, her sleeve pulled up and I saw the numbers. the tattoo. Our eyes met. She said, "that's okay, there are worse things".

instead of Paradise Valley. Two different things. I live next to the town but taught in Paradise Valley Unified School District for over 30 years. Bottom line this is horrible and at 14 years old they should have known better.

since some of them are so badly misinformed. Or rightwing themselves

I remember the Diary of Anne Frank being required reading when I was in school. Isn't this still true?
No American student should be able to get through the American school system without knowing about the horrors of WWII.
