A shooting in Terrytown Thursday afternoon (Dec. 1) left a man dead after an argument at an intersection, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
Family members at the scene identified the victim as Joe McKnight, former NFL player and local high school football standout. McKnight, 28, who went to John Curtis Christian School in River Ridge, played for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. He also played in the Canadian Football League

A witness, who declined to give her name, said she was leaving a store in the area when she saw a man at the intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. The man who was yelling shot the other man more than once, she said.
She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then he fired again, she said.

I remember when he led USC to a win at Ohio State.

(29,322 posts)Mathieu got death threats after remarks on Will Smiths accused killer
Arizona Cardinals cornerback and former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu fears that he will not be able to return to his hometown of New Orleans to pay his respects to former Saints defensive end Will Smith after making strong comments against Smiths killer, which have resulted in death threats, according to the New York Daily News.
I dont think I can go back to New Orleans. I dont think thats possible, Mathieu said. Why? Because I called a spade a spade.

Mathieu went on to call Hayes a coward and killer on Twitter. In an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Mathieu said his comments about the accused have led to threats by Hayess family members.

Tyrann Mathieu tweets about Will Smith's death, New Orleans politics
Mathieu said he knows Cardell Hayes, the man allegedly responsible for Smith's death late Saturday night after a traffic accident.
I know that dude, he been a hating ass coward.... Never knew he'd grow up to be a killer tho.... May you get what you deserve coward

The Honey Badger took to Twitter for a series of rants, including one that called Hayes a "coward" for allegedly shooting Smith in the back. Smith was declared dead at the scene and his wife was taken to a New Orleans hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

(14,847 posts)I drove to New Orleans to see the Sugar Bowl between Ohio State and Alabama a couple years ago (sleeping in my car at a nearby state park to save money), but that will probably be the last time I go there.
The locals seemed rude/mean to waitresses and the like. One waitress seemed to think I was "hitting on her" just because I was polite. I wasn't impressed by the French Quarter either. Well, the jazz bands were cool.
I don't like most "big cities," though.

(12 posts)The racists and racial incidents sure have skyrocketed since 11/8
And there's no mystery what has emboldened them

(3,194 posts)Let's not go making assumptions about who did the shooting. It's not exactly a racist incident if the killer is also black.
How long until the NRA blames Mr. McKnight for not having his own gun?
But remember their motto....it's not the gun's fault, and more guns is better.

(29,322 posts)(Sorry for the all caps, TMZ headline)
The man who shot and killed Joe McKnight is a 54-year-old white male named Ronald Gasser ... the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office tells TMZ Sports.
Law enforcement says Gasser is currently detained and being questioned about why he shot the 28-year-old football star.
At this point, he has NOT been formally arrested.
Cops say Gasser stayed at the scene of the shooting until cops arrived. Once law enforcement got to the scene, he handed over his gun without further incident.

(3,194 posts)I think you're probably 100% correct. The shooter is likely white as the driven snow. He's also had lunch with a black person in the past, which clearly means he is not racist. Wait for that, it's coming I'm sure.

(3,194 posts)I'm surprised he remained at the scene. He was probably on the phone to his high priced attorney, figuring out his defense.
I'll take "In Fear For My Life" for 1,000 Alex.

(12,188 posts)Police are questioning him, instead of he was arrested.
The witness said that he shot him, said "I told you not to fuck with me" and then shot him some more. So, shooting him in defense sounds like a no go..

(3,194 posts)I'm not a lying scumbag defense attorney, so I can't say I'm able to make mince meat out of that statement. But I'm sure this guy will find a defense attorney that can. That's what defense attorneys do.
Never assume the intelligence of a jury, or whether they're willing to convict someone even though it appears to be open and shut case.
The deep south, this guy will probably be back driving the streets with his gun before you know it.

(10,136 posts)Most likely, at the time the report was written, Gasser had not been officially arrested; just in custody and being questioned.

(3,194 posts)If only this guy had his own gun. Then he could have been able to fire first.
There is NOTHING that a loaded gun can't resolve. Seriously, is there? Perhaps this football player dared to cut him off or something. The gun made sure he won't be doing that again. Problem solved.
