GOP Readies Swift Obamacare Repeal With No Replacement Ready

Source: Boomberg Politics

The first major act of the unified Republican government in 2017 will be a vote in Congress to begin tearing down Obamacare.

But the euphoria of finally acting on a long-sought goal will quickly give way to the reality that Republicans -- and President-elect Donald Trump -- have no agreement thus far on how to replace coverage for about 20 million people who gained insurance under the health-care law.

“They haven’t come to a consensus in the House and the Senate about the possible replacement plans,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a conservative economist and former adviser to Senator John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign. “They don’t know Point B.”

Republicans are debating how long to delay implementing the repeal. Aides involved in the deliberations said some parts of the law may be ended quickly, such as its regulations affecting insurer health plans and businesses. Other pieces may be maintained for up to three or four years, such as insurance subsidies and the Medicaid expansion. Some parts of the law may never be repealed, such as the provision letting people under age 26 remain on a parent’s plan.

15. Fox and Breitbart will explain it to the satisfaction

of most.

As Ryan says every time he gets in front of a camera, the ACA is COLLAPSING right now. It CAN'T continue. And Ryan and the proposed HHS secretary, Tom Price, will make sure that's true by doing everything they can to destroy its viability--the genius behind delaying implementation. Insurers are all big publicly held corporations with legal fiduciary duties to their shareholders. They can't stay in the market if they can't reliably guarantee a certain level of profits.

So, if their plan works, in the end conservatives will accept a return to underwriting-set premiums, uncovered conditions, low annual and lifetime limits, etc., at worst angry at both Democrats and Republicans but as usual blaming us more.

At least that's the evil plot...

2. OK Democrats: What will you do to counter their BS narrative?

1. Obamacare did NOT put a burden on Medicare. It's a lie that Paul Ryan cooked up to kill Obamacare.

2. Obamacare was NOT a socialist experiement! It was based on MA Romneycare, which began in the Heritage Foundation!

3.Not only will healthcare vouchers not adequately paid for people's coverage; it won't pay for 2 X-RAYS and a CT Scan. You will be on your own for the rest!

6. The Democrats options are limited as they simply don't have the votes.

They could of course try to filibuster but that isn't a sure thing or they might simply decide to let the GOP cut its own throat and try to use it against the Republicans for the midterm elections.

19. Maybe but what he is saying is this is what We Need to be saying! To everyone we can!

When it comes down to it a lot of republicans don't want Obamacare gone. Like Elizabeth Warren said this is just one more fight where, if we can do something we should.

21. I think we don't understand each other. I am saying that what matters now is that we don't keep

silent. Maybe they can still fuck us over but if we are loud enough, (just like they always are) and drill it into people just how destructive the republicans are we will make headway for elections in the future AND to putting a damper on what they can do now.

Actually if they do repeal it and it creates a God awful mess people will see what fuck ups they are. And hopefully the Democrats can find a way to fix things.....like only they can.

16. That means, my DU brethren, we only have about 20 days...

To organize a "We, the People" Shitstorm rebellion! That doesn't mean emailing or tweeting your congressmen, or even calling their offices. It means showing up ar their local offices to engage them, even if only their aids and/or volunteers are there. Follow up is important. And if you are ignored, write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Comment at local political blogger websites.

According to INDIVISABLE, A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump (and Repub) Agenda, your Congressmen only care about their OWN constituents because all they want to do is get re-elected. And they can't do that if their constituents are going to the press with complaints that they're not doing their job!

It's our civic duty to prod them until they commit to action. And if that doesn't work, we shame them into action with a little help from the press.

It's the only way or we're doomed.

4. Simple GOP strategy:

Repeal all of Obamacare.

"Reform" libel/slander laws to allow public officials to sue for almost any negative article. Then do that.

Send out press releases telling everyone how everything has become wonderful.

8. It's an instant windfall for the richy rich

The Republican campaign promise to end Obamacare could make it harder for millions of poor and middle-class Americans to buy health insurance. But it would also mean a big tax cut for the wealthy, with richest 0.1% pocketing an extra $197,000 on average, according to a new report from the Tax Policy Center.

9. How many of the 20 million insured by Obama Care

Are currently independents and republicans? We need to do what we can to stop this disaster - but we also need to play the long game - showing non-democratic voters who their friends really are.

write sound policy. OF COURSE their reply is to 'fall off a cliff and have bigger worries'.

18. Individual mandate or a club. Which is better.

All the replacement plans I've read through get a little cagey about pre-existing conditions. If you come down with an 'undesired' illness, they're only going to insure you for a reasonable price and with a good policy if you've never had a lapse in coverage. So, if you don't have insurance and you become ill, that could be the end of your chance for affordable insurance.

Here are two fun facts. Thirty percent of people under 65 develop a pre-existing condition. Many more developed a condition that raised their insurance rates significantly before Obamacare came along.

In the near future, it looks to me like you might not have to pay for insurance if you don't want to, but its not much of a choice, and has considerably worse consequences than paying a fine as you have to do now if you gamble and lose.

24. As long as you are willing to sign a form that says you will not seek any taxpayer paid healthcare

and will suffer and die as is your God-given right, only getting healthcare you and your family can afford, fine with me.

Same with the idiots who say the gubment can't make them wear a motorcycle helmet. If you waive any right to public assistance, then go for it. Let's help Darwin out a little.
