Iran: Hassan Rouhani wins landslide in huge victory for reformists
Source: The Guardian
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has won re-election with a landslide victory, in a ringing endorsement of his efforts to re-engage with the West and offer greater freedoms at home.
With a huge turnout, polling stations stayed open until midnight in parts of the country, defying worries that moderates disillusioned by the weak economy or slow pace of change would not vote.
Irans interior minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, announced live on state television that Rouhani received 23,549,616 votes (57%), compared to Raisi 15,786,449 votes, or 38.5 percent.

(5,730 posts)W our elections. The Repubs think their contribution to an election is voter suppression.
We need to be monitored and have a quiet period before the vote...no Comey type interference.

(36,744 posts)Iraq is primarily Arab Shia, along with Iran's oil rich Khuzestan province. The Eastern province that contains the Ghawar oil fields in the KSA is pre-dominately Arab Shia as well.
A recipe for war given current trends.

(3,147 posts)They had what is becoming a traditional election between a moderate establishment candidate and a populist extremist outsider. Thought the MSM we'd be all over this election like France and the Britain leaving the EU. It's good to see people are fighting back against the rise of nationalism and right extremism.
