Ryan: Six months is enough time to find a DACA solution

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that he expects Congress to find a legislative solution for the so-called Dreamers by the time President Donald Trumps decision to rescind the program that currently protects them takes effect six months from now.
The Trump administration earlier this week announced its decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which grants work permits to undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors, pointing to court cases that the White House has said would be likely to find the program unconstitutional. Rather than allow a court to end the program immediately, the White House has said its six-month wind-down period offers Congress a chance to act, and Trump has said that absent action from Capitol Hill, he will revisit this issue when the deadline hits.
Ryan had urged Trump not to do away with DACA but said Thursday during an interview with New York Times deputy Washington editor Jonathan Weisman that the six months allowed by the president should be plenty for Congress to find a solution.
My point was, give us time. Dont do it immediately, because that would create chaos. But he did make the right decision in that President Obama was trying to write law as an executive. The Constitution doesnt allow that, Ryan said. We believe there needs to be a solution here, clearly.
Weve got a timeline, six months, now weve got to go find where the consensus is on how to come to it with a solution. And the six months gives us the kind of time we need.

(24,392 posts)then put it up to a yes/no vote in both Houses with no amendments allowed. Every D will vote for it and enough Rs will come over to pass it. tRump will sign the bill, no questions asked.
