Top Senate Dem: We're going forward with understanding we can work with White House on DACA

Source: The Hill

BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 09/17/17 09:52 AM EDT

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Sunday lawmakers are moving forward under the impression they can work with the White House on a solution for young immigrants protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

During an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Durbin was asked whether there is a deal to protect DACA recipients without funding for the border wall and whether there is a deal to give a path to citizenship to young immigrants who were brought to the U.S. by their parents. "Well there's a basic understanding," Durbin said.

Durbin said President Trump, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) came to a basic understanding without ironing out the details when they met at the White House last week.

"We're going forward with the understanding that we can work with the White House to come up with an agreement that includes DACA, that includes citizenship for those who are protected under the DREAM Act and also has a substantial commitment to increase border protection," he said. Durbin said those are the two main pillars of the understanding.

Schiff: Trump has no ideology

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 09/17/17 09:58 AM EDT

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday said President Trump does not ascribe to a specific political ideology, arguing his recent outreach to Democrats is due to his "personal interest."

“This is a president, look, who has no ideology. He’s not conservative. He’s not liberal,” Schiff told ABC’s “This Week.”

“The only consistent theme seems to be he’s pro-Trump. He’s for his own personal interest.”

The president shocked Republicans earlier this month when he struck a deal with House Democratic leadership to fund the government for three months and raise the debt ceiling. Most recently, Trump met with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) last week to discuss border security and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Schiff described Trump’s recent outreach to Democrats as “purely transactional.”
