The powerful storm, which made landfall Monday night, has since been downgraded to a Category 4 with sustained winds of 155 mph. After it passes over Dominica it is on course to score a direct hit on the US territory of Puerto Rico -- the first hurricane of its strength to do so in 85 years.

"We're just waiting for daybreak to do an assessment of the damage," Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told CNN's Rosemary Church.

Maria made landfall on Dominica late Monday, coming ashore at 9:15 p.m. ET. It was so powerful that it tore the roof off the Prime Minister's residence.
...
"My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains."

The eye went right over Dominica (which is high, so the top wind speeds have come down slightly, but are now picking up again over open water), and the eye wall came very close to Guadeloupe. Next to get a direct hit will probably be the US Virgin Islands, or possibly the British Virgin Islands slightly to the north. Then eastern Puerto Rico.

The latest major Atlantic hurricane of the season, Maria, has powered back to category five strength after pounding the Caribbean island of Dominica.

It weakened to a four after wreaking "widespread damage" on the island but is now packing maximum sustained winds of 265km/h (165mph) again.

The storm is moving roughly along the same track as Irma, this season's other category five hurricane.

At least one person was killed and two others are missing in Guadeloupe.
