Fresh off their heated, fuck-encrusted shouting match in China, tensions and policy fissures between Donald Trump advisers Steve Mnuchin and Peter Navarro are at an all-time high, with the former believing the latter to be a crank and a recurring nuisance, and the latter accusing the former of trade capitulation akin to Nazi appeasement, according to sources whove spoken with both men.
Last week, tensions and ideological warfare between Mnuchin, President Trumps Treasury secretary, and Navarro, the presidents hawkish top trade adviser whom Trump has dubbed my Peter, spilled into public view after multiple news outlets reported what was described to The Daily Beast as a screaming match between the two senior officials during an official trip to China earlier this month. Navarro, a nationalist and protectionist hardliner on China and trade, and Mnuchin, a key figure from the free-trader camp of the Trump administration, had been in conflict for weeks over trade negotiations with China. According to those close to Navarro, he views Mnuchin as one of the leading impediments to taking a tough stance toward China in ongoing negotiationssomething the president campaigned on but has since taken varying degrees of softer stances while in office.
Recently, the pair have fought over Trumps declared openness to relaxing punitive measures on Chinese electronics firm ZTE Technologiesmeasures that were supposed to penalize ZTE for violating U.S. sanctions on Iran and other countries. Relatedly, Navarro believes the trade framework Mnuchin has been negotiating with Chinese government officials will inevitably undermine the presidents America First promises.
As for Mnuchins positions, Navarro hasaccording to multiple sources who spoke to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymityprivately nicknamed Mnuchin Neville Chamberlain (in reference to the Conservative United Kingdom prime minister famous for his foreign policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler) and likened the economic threat from China to that of fascist dictator Hitler.

(3,813 posts)Can we root for them both to lose, along with their boss?
Mnuchin would sell America out for a dime without a second thought.
Navarro is insane and entirely without a clue about how trade has tied the world together. He would have been wrong in the 1930's. At the present time, he is not just wrong, but entirely disconnected from reality.
Their boss is of course a narcissistic grifter, also ready to sell-out the citizens he ostensibly serves.
None of the three seems at all ready to grapple with, never mind understand and manage the complexity required to advance a suite of national interests in a multivariable environment like international trade.
I'm rooting for impeachment to render the Mnuchin-Navarro conflict academic.
