ACLU is spending more than $1 million in TV ads comparing Kavanaugh to Bill Clinton, Cosby

Source: The Washington Post

The American Civil Liberties Union said it has spent a little more than $1 million on television advertisements to oppose President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh.

The campaign, announced Monday, is another sign that the ACLU, which describes itself as a nonpartisan organization, has energized its advocacy efforts in the Trump era. Two days earlier, the group’s national board voted to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination — something it has done only three other times in the past century.

“ACLU’s political growth and advocacy has increased since Donald Trump was elected president. We’ve had a massive growth in volunteer base and massive growth in financial resources,” said Faiz Shakir, ACLU’s national political director. “People have funded us, and I think they expect a return.”

Since Trump’s election, the ACLU said its membership has jumped from 400,000 to 1.84 million

13. Exactly. Any comparison won't be of the person to the person,

for sure, the way the MAGAs love to smear Bill with comparisons to sexual predators.

3. It is disgraceful to put Clinton in the same category as those other two men.

And so the swift boaters will be rewarded again. And they'll get Kavanaugh on the Court to boot.

They will then celebrate that even people on the left acknowledged that they were right about Clinton all along.

10. Exactly ....

I'd hate to see Bill Clinton become the focus of what's going on with Kavanaugh. thuglicans are good at switching the narrative and rehashing the Clinton thing all over again 🙄 It's bad enough fatso-in-chief calls Hillary Crooked H., because he's the treasonous hog who cuddled up with putin who helped get him into the White House. tRump/thuglicans can get away with racism, grandstanding, switching narratives, out and out lying et al. Look @tRump who continues to call Elizabeth Warren Pocahontus. But, if a Pres. Obama did/said one quarter of what tReasonous fatso does and says 🙄

ACLU, make your last stand and keep your focus on Kavanaugh, and not on Bill Clinton or Bill Cosby.

12. You know, some Clinton-hating rightwinger's head will explode over this.

They won't be able to resolve hating Bill Clinton and agreeing with the ACLU simultaneously.

It's sort of brilliant.

Including Clinton staves off any complaint they are partisan.

7. I'm ok with that ad, it's about lying. It doesn't compare what they did.

Iit shows two men who lied and were caught, and a third man lying who will be caught.

8. When did Manchin say he opposes Kavanaigh?

Just today I heard that no one knows where he stands.

I don't like Clinton being in that group "of powerful men". It is misleading. Clinton was guilty of lying (which the rest did too) but what he did was not sexual assault without a person's consent...big difference!

9. Just to be clear...

The ACLU has both a 501-c-3 entity that doesn't engage in politics, and a separate
501-c-4 that does.

11. For curious, here is the ACLU's explination....

ACLU: Gifts to the ACLU allow us the greatest flexibility in our work. While not tax deductible, they advance our extensive litigation, communications and public education programs. They also enable us to advocate and lobby in legislatures at the federal and local level to advance civil liberties. When you make a contribution to the ACLU, you become a “card-carrying” member who takes a stand for civil liberties.

ACLU Foundation: If you prefer to make a tax-deductible gift, we encourage you to support the ACLU Foundation. Gifts to the Foundation support our litigation, communications, advocacy and public education efforts. With a gift of $1,000, you join the Crystal Eastman Leadership Society, a group of supporters leading the fight for equality and freedom.
