Gandhi statue pulled down in Ghana after controversy over 'racist' writings

Source: CNN

(CNN) A controversial statue of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi has been pulled down at the University of Ghana following protests and petitions for its removal.

The figure was removed between Tuesday night and Wednesday from where it had stood on a recreational area of the university campus in Ghana's capital of Accra since 2016.

Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration approved the statue's removal, university spokeswoman Stella Amoa told CNN on Friday, following petitions by the university's council to the government. CNN contacted the ministry for comment Friday but did not immediately receive a response.

After its unveiling two years ago, the monument sparked protests among students and faculty members, who claim that Gandhi was "racist" and African figures should be put up first, according to a Change.org petition.

Gandhi may have been a passionate Indian patriot, but he was pretty racist, homophobic, and misogynist as well.

....people were inferior and thus, he supported apartheid. I think he even wanted a version of it instituted in India.

The word “racist” should not be in “ “s indicating skepticism. He was an acknowledged racist.

I remember pointing this out a few years ago on DU arguing with another DUer using links to Gandhi's own words - tons of it - who wanted to believe despite facts that Gandhi was not a serious racist, only leaving SoAf because of being treated as indigenous African people.

My God, he sharplyy criticized Jewish people during Hitler's reign for Not committing suicide en masse. And ingratiated himself to empire because of their shared Aryan heritage.

As the statues of Cecil Rhodes across Southern Africa came down so shall Gandhi's, finally.

The Gandhi narrative is one that just burns my butt. As Arundathi Roi said, "Marting Luther King, Jr. was more Gandhi than Gandhi," who I think she said would have never met with King. I may be wrong because it's been a few years since I listened to this lecture.

Fascinating Indian history, truly heartbreaking, of Gandhi's battle with Dalit, Untouchable, genius Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, who on his death bed mourned and wished that he had never given in to Gandhi for peace sake.

Many Thanks for posting, Jose Garcia.
