Avenatti accused of embezzling nearly $2 million that NBA player paid ex-girlfriend

Source: LA Times

When Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat wired $2.75 million to Michael Avenatti in January 2017, the pro basketball player intended most of the money to go to his former girlfriend, Alexis Gardner.

Avenatti was Gardner’s attorney. An actress and barista, she’d hired him just a few weeks before to negotiate a settlement of a potential lawsuit against Whiteside. It’s unclear what she would have alleged. Avenatti quickly struck a $3 million deal, and the $2.75 million was Whiteside’s first payment.

Avenatti, prosecutors say, was entitled to take just over $1 million in legal fees, leaving the rest for Gardner.

Instead, they allege, Avenatti hid Whiteside’s payment from her and immediately took $2.5 million to buy a share of a private jet.

1. Disappointing, but not surprising.

The one good thing he's done was put some of Trump's corruption on the front page for awhile, but truthfully, people have been saying all along Avantti was himself corrupt. I didn't want to believe it. Guess he won't be running for President anytime soon.

4. This seems SO FLAGRANTLY fucked up, while also SO easy to catch ...

I have to wonder whether, you know, this might not be bullshit.

A Private Jet? Really?

10. His jet was confiscated a few days ago in Santa Barbara. I wonder if he has a drug problem among

other issues.

11. Well, I must say, thinking you'd get away w/something THIS clumsy and obvious ...

Sure sounds the work of someone on drugs ... if it indeed happened like this.

19. Bi-polar needs to be ruled out

assuming a drug history.
Tho, actually, people with a coke/speed history are often mis-diagnosed as bi-polar when evaluated, if drug use is not considered.

I caught a strong whiff of Scaramucci like behavior when he started acting very aggressive about the Stormy case, then suddenly we are hearing presidential ambitions, it all came on pretty fast, which made me go hmmmm.

then again, he could be a hot shot lawyer who fell in love with his own bullshit. That and L.A. happens a lot.

6. Trump operates in the same way..........

Paying construction workers 75% of what's due or just not paying them. He knows they'll settle instead of paying a lawyer ten times what the remaining 25% would be.

Avenatti is a crook, but no less of one than a setting President.

22. Shortly after the Stormy D story broke, the LA Times did a fairly thorough bio of Avenatti...

Hubby pointed it out to me, and I read it too. Bottom line for us: he was always really smart, also a smart-ass, and so sharp he was bound to cut himself some day. Looks like that day has come.

I'm sorry for his clients, like Stormy Daniels and the one in this case. They were abused -- and he then abused them as well.

and that's the last I will say about those two

14. It is possible that he's a critic of Trump AND a scumbag, you know. They're not mutually exclusive.

Opposition to Trump doesn't automatically make someone a good person. Furthermore, not everything is part of some grand conspiracy theory. Odds are he's being accused of this because he's a scumbag and a grifter who steals from his clients. This is merely one of many similar accusations.

20. Yes

One thing that can be said for him--he wasn't president or president-elect when he (apparently) stole money.

e.g. where'd all of the inaugural funds go, red don?

16. He's been indicted w/36 counts. Then the IRS is coming after him.

This stuff is in bank records. His former firm is suing him, too, I think.

My guess is that he's going to prison. He's done some serious embezzling from his clients, and maybe others. I feel for the ones he stole from. They may never get their settlement money.
