Republican Lt. Gov. Reeves wins Mississippi governor's race

Source: Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Republicans are keeping their hold on the governorship in Mississippi, despite facing the best-funded Democrat to run for the position in more than a decade.

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves on Tuesday defeated Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood and two candidates who ran low-budget campaigns.

Reeves will succeed Gov. Phil Bryant, who is limited by state law to two terms.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence both traveled to Mississippi in recent days to campaign for Reeves, who is completing his second term as lieutenant governor after serving two terms as the elected state treasurer.

And there ARE some there. Mississippi has the largest percentage of African-Americans of any state in the country, but the state’s sordid history and voter suppression efforts keep the state from making any progress. It’s really sad. I hate to write off an entire state, but what’s the solution?

Looks like Mississippi needs some outside assistance in helping the constituents to get active. I mean really, white people govern this state that is majority African-American. WTF! Sounds like this state is stuck back in time with slavery.

Time to wake up Mississippi !!!

It is 59.1% white, 35.6% black, and the rest make up Asian, Native American, and other races.

But it has the highest percentage of African-Americans of any state. Actually I just looked it up on the Census Bureau's site. The estimate for 2018 was 37.8% black, 56.5% white, 5.7% for all others (Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, etc.) If there wasn't such a history of suppression and intimidation, Mississippi would probably be a blue state. The old boys in charge are probably terrified by that large minority population.

Yes, there is some racism, like everywhere, but I don't think it's as racist as some states in the north. The African American population is concentrated in the Delta and Jacksonville areas which are heavily Democratic. In my opinion its more about maintaining the local power structure, particularly cronyism. The most racist place I have lived was in northern Wisconsin. It was the poorest county in the state and didn't even have a Democratic party. Sean Duffy territory. Everything was corrupt and still is.
