The Wisconsin Supreme Court blocked Gov. Tony Evers late executive order postponing in-person voting in Tuesday's elections, meaning the states presidential primary and hundreds of local elections will proceed hours after the governor announced he was postponing them due to coronavirus.
The latest chaotic turn in Wisconsin's Tuesday elections came after the GOP-controlled state legislature challenged Evers' order. The state Supreme Court split 4-2 along ideological lines, with Justice Daniel Kelly, who is up for reelection, abstaining.
Evers who had previously maintained that he alone did not have the authority to postpone an election issued his order seeking to push back the elections on Monday, saying that he was acting to reduce exposure to the virus and ease concerns among his constituents about the spread of the pandemic. Evers issued a stay-at-home order last month as part of his administration's efforts to fight coronavirus.
At a press conference before the state Supreme Court's order, Evers indicated this would be his last move to try to postpone the election. "This will be the last avenue that were taking," Evers said at the press conference. There's not a Plan B. There's not a Plan C."

Nakedly Partisan Wisconsin Republicans: Safety For Me But Not For Thee!
https://crooksandliars.com/2020/04/nakedly-partisan-wisconsin-republicans
The same Wisconsin courts that insisted today's primary couldn't be postponed due to the pandemic just suspended in-person court proceedings to protect participants from .... coronavirus.

In an effort to protect the public, attorneys, court staff, and judges from the health risks associated with COVID-19, the Wisconsin courts have issued orders temporarily suspending in-person proceedings statewide, with certain limited exceptions.
Yes, those are the same Wisconsin courts that just refused to allow Gov. Tony Evers to postpone today's primary election because of the pandemic. Their ruling was upheld by SCOTUS in a blatantly political decision reminiscent of Bush v. Gore.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her dissent, "The Court's order requires absentee voters to postmark their ballots by election day, April 7--i.e, tomorrow--even if they did not receive their ballots by that date. That is a novel requirement."
And this being Wisconsin, it's all about preserving the Republican majority on the state Supreme Court. They want to force the election because they want the low turnout. They assume it will help them win the most important race on the ballot, that state supreme court seat..........................................

(745 posts)1. if there is no rise in infections despite normal spring election attendance, great. that means that somehow everyone kept things sanitary.
2. if there is no rise in infections because of a massive drop in turnout from the denser more urban areas that trend blue, it's great that we avoid a bump in infections and people are staying healthy but I guess that'll happen at a cost, right? The state will keep trending redder as a result of cities having lower turnout while your more remote rural communities turn out just fine.

(2,953 posts)Other Dems from Wisconsin on this board will disagree with me, but my independent thoughts:
In 2010, Walker had better messaging than Barrett. Enthusiasm gap - Tea Party for Walker, Barrett didn't motivate Dem voters (I did a write-in). Same election, Republicans took control from the Democrats both branches of the legislature. They have the Senate since, but at times a slight majority.
In 2011. failed to recall the Governor. Too many people felt the recall process wasn't warranted.
In 2012, the legislative boundaries were re-drawn, in secret by the party in control, to the point it will be years if not decades for the Dems to win it back.
In 2019, the liberal backed Supreme Court justice didn't run the best campaign and lost to a weak opponent, despite being favored to win.
Good news, in 2018 the Democrats won all four statewide Constitutional offices. Just need to court the rural vote (ie kitchen table issues such as school funding and health care funding).

Have sanitizer and some Clorox wipes available
Stand 6 ft apart
and VOTE every republican OUT.
They are depending on a small turnout so they can win.
Good luck, be safe, and kick their asses to the curb.

(1,996 posts)using the courts. Their black robed dirt bags have been a threat to democracy for decades. Anybody with a few strands of progressive tendencies should hate the GOP, but here we are, people say it's bad but nothing is really done. I hate keeping up on news anymore because it's just one long tape of shit those scum get away with. Nobody seems to really know how to deal with them and it gets old. I live in Nebraska, they had their shit trolls parading in the Capitol with AR-15s not that long ago. I hate watching democracy get drowned in a bathtub year after year and it just seems the means to oppose the GOP are not there. I've had it. I want to see more people truly say to themselves "we've had enough" and mean it at the deepest level possible.
