Marine Corps Bans Public Display of Confederate Flag
Source: The New York Times
The commandant of the Marine Corps has banned the public display of the Confederate battle flag, a symbol that he said had the power to inflame division.
I am mindful that many people believe that flag to be a symbol of heritage and regional pride, Gen. David H. Berger said in a letter dated Monday and addressed to his fellow Marines. But I am also mindful of the feelings of pain and rejection of those who inherited the cultural memory and present effects of the scourge of slavery in our country.

(38,187 posts)It is not the flag of America. It is the flag of a nation that tried to destroy America. I'm surprised it has been allowed to be displayed this long.

I always think of the Confederate flag as a public declaration that shouts "Dumbass and proud of it!"

(15,805 posts)Why does "regional pride" have any bearing on a symbol that glorifies traitors, racists and secessionists?
Now if the military could also get rid of the religious symbolism and it's links to racism, sexism, child abuse and greed, that would be great.

My heritage is entirely Southern, and that fucking flag does not now, nor has it ever, represented me or my family.

(16,820 posts)All of my family is from the South and I never encountered any of them with a Confederate battle flag. About the only time people would see those flags was at Ole Miss football games or maybe in the back window of some redneck's pickup.

And then there are those of us who have one or more ancestors who served the Union during the Civil War. (I have one great-great-great-grandfather who was a first generation immigrant and served in the Union Army.) We have a few feelings ourselves.
I was in the Marines for ten years myself - I am proud that the Commandant is doing this, albeit late.

(7,391 posts)Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. That we do not overstate the dangers to our institution, a reference to a few facts will sufficiently prove.[link:https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/declaration-causes-seceding-states|
