Brazil's justice minister resigns, accusing Bolsonaro of improper conduct

RIO DE JANEIRO Brazilian Justice Minister Sérgio Moro, who shepherded the sprawling corruption probe that imprisoned some of Latin America's most influential people, resigned in protest Friday after President Jair Bolsonaro fired his police chief.
In an extraordinary resignation speech, Moro charged that Bolsonaro was trying to improperly politicize the Justice Ministry. The move sent political shock waves through Latin Americas largest country as it grapples with the worst public health crisis in a lifetime.
Moro said he could discern only political and improper motives behind Bolsonaros decision to fire Maurício Valeixo, the head of the federal police. He accused Bolsonaro of wanting to install a police chief who would grant him access to confidential reports and take investigative requests, jeopardizing the agencys political independence.
That really isnt the role of the federal police to serve this kind of information, Moro said.
The political drama rapidly evolved throughout Friday. The Brazilian attorney general called for an inquiry into the accusations. Then Bolsonaro denied any misconduct in a lengthy and unfocused speech. And finally, a nightly news program aired messages leaked by Moro that appeared to undercut Bolsonaros rebuttals.

(48,789 posts)I really wish people would read what they write from a reader's point of view. Lazy writers save a few seconds of their time and leave hundreds of readers spending more seconds each wondering what the heck.
"this guy"?

(2,221 posts)I was thinking that Ex Justice Minister Sergio Moro might find himself dead one of these days. Moro pretty much pissed off one of the most powerful people in the country, a man who holds considerable sway in the nations military and has many resources at his disposal.
I read that Moro has some popularity in Brazil, but I doubt he has much power left to stop Bolsonaro from doing whatever he wants to him if he ever decides to retaliate. Hopefully nothing happens and Moro and his family live a peaceful rest of their lives.

(48,789 posts)Health Minister not fired for collapsing health care; fired for opposing Bolsonaro's downplaying.
And Bolsonaro spoke (and coughed) at a protest supporting Brazilian military dictatorships.
He's been fighting Governors to try to force opening up. Brazil badly under tested and under reported, but still rising in statistics, passing Canada.
The Bolsonaro Catastrophe will join the Trump Catastrophe.
