'The Bible is not a prop': Religious leaders, lawmakers outraged over Trump church visit

Episcopal bishop on President Trump visit to St. John's Church: 'He didn't come to pray'

June 2, 2020, 5:55 AM CDT / Updated June 2, 2020, 8:34 AM CDT

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers and religious leaders — including the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington — voiced outrage after police used tear gas against peaceful protesters outside the White House before President Donald Trump's photo-op at nearby St. John's Episcopal Church on Monday evening.

The Rev. Mariann Budde, bishop of the Washington diocese, said Tuesday that Trump held up the Bible in front of St. John's "as if it were a prop or an extension of his military and authoritarian position."

Budde, in an interview with Craig Melvin on NBC's "TODAY" show, said that what Trump did in front of the church she oversees "was an abuse of the spiritual tools and symbols of our traditions and of our sacred space."

"He didn't come to church to pray, he didn't come to church to offer condolences to those who are grieving," she said. "He didn't come to commit to healing our nation, all the things that we would expect and long for from the highest leader in the land."............................................

THAT picture? He standing in front of a boarded up church and you can't even tell it's a church. It could be a crack house. Or a meth lab.

It looks like the poster for a Quentin Tarantino movie about really bad dudes.

(the worthless loudmouth in Florida) was / is advocating violence too ... his tweet was banned or taken down by twitter, a shocking move (at least I was surprised, knowing that twitter has been worthless in monitoring and acting on disruptive tweets (which it did surprising enough against rump even (two of them)).

I think sometimes his aides alter or have some input on his stupid ideas but this was so awful in so many ways and so transparently fed by his complete maladjustment of an ego that it was his idea alone. Of course it wasn't thought out so he ends up looking like a complete fool walking to a boarded up building trailed by his spineless sycophants, who looked just as foolish, then holds a book upside down in the air. It also once again demonstrates his complete contempt for his own followers that such a lame charade will work, and of course it will for the great majority.

Really, whether Trump thought it up or not, it could have been just as clueless Ivanka, Jared or any of the others. Take the protest down, ya that will show dominance. Stand in front of a burned church so the Christian right will be angry, there you go. Oh oh and Trump. hold a bible. Like a picture of Moses or something. None of them are exceptionally smart like a president would generally surround himself with.

It props up humanity in a sense, giving people a bit of hope in a random, violent world, however misplaced.

It's also total bullshit. It may have served a purpose millennia ago, but it dismays me that so many still lean on this violent, misogynistic book full of rape, murder, and plunder.

The fact that some people, some Trump supporters, could be inspired by such a display is sad.

Have you read Thomas Jefferson's version of the Bible? He tried to strip out the mumbo-jumbo and boil it to the core of Jesus' philosophy.

That, and the Gnostic Gospels, present a much clearer picture, one that is hard(er) to distort into the Prosperity Gospel and Apocalyptic perversions running rampant in America today.

In 2018, the Episcopal Church had 1,835,931 baptized members, of whom 1,676,349 were in the United States. In 2011, it was the nation's 14th largest denomination. In 2015, Pew Research estimated that 1.2 percent of the adult population in the United States, or 3 million people, self-identify as mainline Episcopalians.

As a bishop in the Episcopal Church, and an American citizen, I am shaken watching protestors in Lafayette Park gassed and cleared so that the President of the United States can do a photo op in front of St. John's Episcopal Church holding a Bible. This is blasphemy in real time.
