Gov. Abbott pauses Texas reopening phases amid statewide COVID-19 spike

Source: ABC 7 News Amarillo

AUSTIN (KVII) — Texas businesses will have to wait a while longer to go back to normal.

Thursday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the Lone Star State will put its reopening plan on hold due to the recent statewide uptick in COVID-19 hospitalizations and cases.

Abbott said this does not roll back any of the opening phases so far, but increases in occupancy are on hold as the state grapples with some of its highest ever hospitalization numbers.

In a statement, the governor said he does not want to move backwards, but does want to ensure Texans stay safe, wear masks and safely face the future.

"The last thing we want to do as a state is go backwards and close down businesses. This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business," he said.

He urged citizens to keep socially distancing and practice hand washing, among other hygiene protocols.

So very many will continue non-compliance with COVID-19 Precautions...Even if everyone complies, the risk remains as this is not a 100% prevention...it only reduces the probability...So, as long as so many are going to be non-compliant...it is below treading water standards.

If the ongoing focus was compliance with COVID-19 precautions since March 2020...we could be in very good shape with containment/ mitigation...Just like other countries. The fact that our demi-god president has sabotaged any reasonable prevention of COVID-19 such as the mask, we can't recover now...this is the wall he has built and it is killing so very many...

Rural counties? Sure.

Urban areas? Massive spread. Houston's the leader in TX right now. And if you look at the map of the county Houston's in, there's a nice strong correlation between being Af-Am/Latino and having higher COVID prevalence. So it's worst--with, apparently, the most "mask-refusers"--in the bluest part of a blue area.

Truly, because of Trump. (D) always do what Trump says. /snark off

The virus doesn't care what you want, Greggie.

Your fucking job is to protect the public, not to try to look like a tough guy for your idiotic base. Things will have to be shut down again, the sooner it's done, the less economic impact it's going to have in the long term.

You and fellow trump-sucker Dan "some things more important than life" Patrick have blood on your hands. Permanently. The choice was clear: The welfare of the Texas people, or lockstep fealty to a corrupt, psychotic president. The choice you made is clear for all to see. Unforgivable.

What the hell. This is just more talk and no action.

Red Texans, the ones listening to his crap ARE NOT going to socially distance or wear masks or stop going out!

They think this is a hoax because Abbott never tells them different. He just tells them they will corral it and move on.

The last thing he wants to do is piss off the big money he got when he appointed all those business donors to his reopening commission.

This has nothing to do with saving lives. He is a criminal.

… part of his plan to "corral" the virus will be to cut back on testing so as not to show as many positive tests. Then, voila, we'll see the numbers go down. Virus corralled - time to fully reopen. Brilliant plan, right out of Trump's playbook.
