Citing 'irrational fears' of killer pandemic, Republicans fight face masks in Congress

Source: Yahoo

WASHINGTON — A bitter dispute erupted in a congressional hearing room on Friday, with Republicans refusing to wear face coverings and Democrats insisting that they do so.

“Why is this so complicated?” a frustrated Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said at one point in response to Republican intransigence, speaking through what appeared to be an N95 respirator. “There’s one thing we can do to try to protect other people when we’re together, which is put on a mask. It doesn’t cost us anything. Why would we not do that? Why is it some kind of macho thing, like, ‘If I don’t wear a mask, I’m tough’?”

Republicans did not appear to be moved by his appeals, or those of other Democrats. The charge against mask wearing was led by Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., a physician who was also a major in the U.S. Army. Green said he could “cite many other professionals” who advised against protective face coverings.

Green did not proceed to cite any such professionals.

When they take back the house they can make the rules. Till then, they can't go around infecting people just because they are stupid.

He could have jumped in popularity if he had tried to do a good job with the coronavirus. We could have come together as a nation; we could have been singing from our terraces like the Italians.

But all he knows how to do is provoke, divide and destroy. His 'soul' is just a smouldering mass of hatred and greed.

mark green quacks. At least our real representatives will be protected from their colleagues' germs. Hopefully soon, the idiots not wearing masks will not be meeting in a conference room unless they are trying to cop a plea.

That is a huge jump.

Worldometers is my favorite site for this. They collect their own data from governments around the world and throughout the US, with some use of wire services, and they continually update the site.

Johns Hopkins always seems to have a lower number and that's the one everyone goes by. I don't like that site though, for a number of reasons. One is that the number of new daily cases is never up to date.

1.3acres collects their own data and is at 42,036 right now, The Washington Post has 45,231 right now (they manage to get up-to-date numbers from Johns Hopkins), and NY Times collects their own data but doesn't seem to post it live throughout the day.

May 11 - that's when the White House required everyone in West Wing to wear masks

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/11/white-house-issues-memo-requiring-staff-to-wear-masks-in-west-wing.html

White House issues memo requiring staff to wear masks in West Wing, CNBC, 5/11/20
... The directive from the White House management office was laid out in a memo to staffers Monday afternoon, NBC reported. ... The memo also asked staff members to avoid visiting the West Wing, where the Oval Office is located, unless it is necessary, the sources told NBC.

Something to keep in mind when some fuckhead harasses you about wearing a mask -- if they're so ineffective or the Covid19 is just a hoax, or if only wimps wear them, then why does your fearless leader require everyone near him to wear a mask? Why is he wimpifying his staff -- and by extension himself?

It can not be OK to defy House rules like that—especially when the rule is a simple, public safety measure. Lock them up. Teach them to respect the institution, at the very least.

generally with limbaugh, who sets up the other blowhards every day with a well prechewed smorgasbord of denial for them to pick through

it started as a total hoax and went through various 'revisions' always downplaying the threat and making fun of mask wearers as well as calling them a political attack on trump

until dems stop ignoring rw putin radio we're playing catchup

limbaugh needs to be blamed for tens of thousands of COVID deaths

dem and media and prog leadership live in cities and though even there the liberal talk is comparatively limited, there sometimes is some.

by mentioning 'traitors' by name limbaugh can send a lot of hate at someone in retaliation but i think mostly they see limbaugh as despicable and see him personally instead of as the leader of a well coordinated chorus of 1500 radio stations

also they read and watch TV to get their information, no time for radio except music

also, RW has been selling for decades that their dominance has to do with 'market demand' and those blowhards are just political entertainers enjoying free speech, that air america failed because there was no demand, etc

and people believe that crap - that 95% of americans prefer the hate, ignorance and lies - rather than that it's a well coordinated monopoly worth trillions in global warming denial, war, deregulation, tax breaks for billionaires, corporate nutball supremes, out-of-their-league demented presidents, etc

Put anyone who does not want to wear a mask in a room together, and then those who are safely masking in another room. Zoom or WebEx the meeting so that everyone is in the virtual room together and then carry on with the nation's business. If they want to cough or spit all over each other's GOP-ignorant asses, let them infect themselves to their heart's content. Keep that one room the "mask free" zone so that all the germs stay in there and make them wear masks everywhere else.

Kind of like a smoking room at a rehab center, except you know - potentially lethal.

That would be what I would do, especially if they have ANY legal standing, letting them get away with the ignorance of not wearing a mask.
