Georgia COVID-19 cases exceed 90K on Friday, local death tolls hold steady

Source: Savannah Now

Georgia’s confirmed-case count for COVID-19 rose by 2,784 since Thursday to reach 90,493 on Friday, while the statewide death toll rose by seven to reach 2,856 on July 3, according to figures posted just after 3 p.m. by the Georgia Department of Public Health.

Chatham County’s total COVID-19 cases rose by 142 since Thursday to hit 1,647 on Friday, while the county’s death toll remained at 37, where it has held steady all week, according to the DPH Coastal Health District.

The death rate in Chatham County, measured as the percentage of known cases who die from COVID-19, fell slightly to about 2.2% on Friday.

Bryan County’s confirmed-case count increased by five to 147 on Friday, while the Bryan death toll held steady at five, where it has remained for over three weeks.

While other states have scaled back reopening efforts as cases have grown, Kemp is moving in the opposite direction and leaning into the spread by continuing to relax social distancing requirements.

Gov. Kemp says restaurants can operate at full capacity; conventions set to resume

Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order June 11 that relaxes more restrictions put in place since April to stem the spread of Covid-19, including no limits on the number of dine-in customers at restaurants, allowing for conventions to resume and reopening live performance venues. The new order comes days before state lawmakers are to return to the State Capitol and pass a budget that has been rocked by the pandemic.

Some public health experts question the governor's decision to continue loosening the coronavirus guidelines, saying current data shows an increase in Covid-19 cases since May 1, with spikes occurring in smaller counties outside metro Atlanta.

Kemp’s executive order immediately lifts the shelter-in-place order on those 65 and older unless they have underlying medical conditions such as heart or lung disease. Most of the other relaxed measures go into effect at midnight on June 16. The full executive order can be read here.

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported the morning of June 12 there have been 54,973 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the state and 2,375 deaths. The counties with the most cases and deaths are Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett and Hall. The numbers of cases and deaths continue to disproportionately impact Black Georgians and Black people across the U.S.

Even if you do not die, this virus can leave long lasting terrible health effects.

3. And what, the numbers of new cases started going up more dramatically about two weeks ago, right?

so we should start to see the death rates going up this week.

And actually looking at some of the data for Georgia, it looks like the cases started going up about 4 weeks ago, and like clockwork, two weeks later the death rates started to tick up.

5. If thats the case, what about Cuomo? Should he be charged too?

Cuomo's deadly order to nursing homes to accept covid positive residents was a disaster. 1/2 the deaths in NY came from nursing homes.
I know the lead manager of two nursing/retirement homes here in my home county. They've had ONE case total. Because they wouldnt allow anyone with covid to be admitted unless they tested negative twice. They also restricted visitors early on. And having two relatives in these places, I would be livid if the facilities had been forced to accept positive residents.

6. Cuomo made a lamentable mistake that he will probably have to pay for politically.

At what stage of Covid did he make that decision? Because it matters. If it was January - March, with the stupid information we were receiving, nothing would surprise me. But, today, where other Republicans are pulling back on their openings, Kemp is finding new ways to spread Covid to his constituents.

But all that aside, if we would ALL wear masks we could shut this damn thing down a lot faster.
Look at Taiwan. croatia. Vietnam. Singapore. Etc. Hell, kids are still in school in Taiwan!
Masks WORK.

4. The large majority of these cases are now in the 18-29 age group. That wasnt the case months ago.

One of the reasons the deaths have tracked lower. Also, the doctors know a lot more now about treatment. Allowing for shorter hospital stays. My local hospital announces the Covid numbers daily. They're about 2/3 of where they were back in march. So thats a good thing.
But i'm wearing my mask whenever i'm around people.

10. Deaths lag behind cases.

Sounds like these people, even young ones, are getting very seriously sick. They need serious treatments, ventilators, ecmo machines, and so on. As hospitals fill up, and no more room is available in places to provide these intensive treatments, death rate will go up-I don't see any other way.

11. From what a doctor here says, its better than before.

He's been in practice for years in this area. He said while more are coming in right now, they're not staying as long because of the increased knowledge of treatment. And they arent rushing to ventilators like earlier in the year. And staying off those gets you OUT faster. Only speaking for the area I live in, where our hospital releases numbers daily. The larger regional hospital 20 miles away has NEVER released any numbers. I dont understand that. Thats really the only way we can really tell how its going. I dont know if they can be FORCED to, but i think we should know. I'm sure the state has their numbers, but it matters where they come from. If deaths havent spiked in the next 2-3 weeks, then i'll believe what the doctor posted a lot more.

One of the doctors was saying he got 10 calls about people needing ecmo machines. He only had 3 machines available. So he had to decide which 3 people to accept. But what is going happen to the other 7? And all the new patients that are going to need ecmo machines? I don't see how death rates won't go up.
