Rep. Ilhan Omar Defeats Antone Melton-Meaux, 3 Other Challengers In Primary Election
Source: CBS Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Incumbent Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won Minnesotas 5th District Primary Tuesday evening.
The race was hotly contested, as Omar faced four challengers from her own party, including heavily-funded Antone Melton-Meaux. His campaign spokesman told WCCO he conceded at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Tuesdays election was also a test of Minnesotas absentee-voting system, with unprecedented numbers voting by mail because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Election results were delayed because of the influx of absentee ballots which were sent in.
Omar was first elected to the seat in 2018, becoming the first Somali American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. She won that crowded primary field by more than 18 percentage points, and has since made her mark as a progressive and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. She was endorsed by the DFL and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

(2,412 posts)We are thrilled at this household. I will never forget how she challenged Eliot Abrams about his reprehensible human rights record in Guatemala! As a human rights activist I visited Guatemala survivors on three delegations for my national churchs human rights organization. I am so proud of her for telling the world about his record when he went before congress. I sent her a beautiful thank you card and a photo of myself at the Forensic Anthropology Center in Guatemala City.
Bless her and bless her work!!!!! We donated to her campaign.

(2,029 posts)Crushing it is a common expression used when someone is doing their job particularly well, or exceeding all of their goals. Unlike the the literal definition of the word crush (to destroy with force to the point of injury), crushing it has an extremely positive connotation

(5,042 posts)Y'know, we don't run around demanding every single one of them post their accomplishments. We are happy they are there. But for a few souls, some just have a real bee in their bonnet and make it obvious. Every. Single. Time.
Happy for Omar. The racial attacks from the right have been blatant and disgusting. It's sad there are a few here fully ready to piggyback off that just because someone's "not going with the flow" a small percentage of the time. Kinda weird for someone who likes to complain about certain states not being diverse enough, then whines about a strong candidate from a diverse district.
Kudos to Nancy, Elizabeth and the Minnesota Senate delegation (all women!) for endorsing her!

(5,042 posts)I hope Mr Melton-Meaux's ethics investigation works out for the best. $4 million is a lot of money to lose a primary.

(58,785 posts)also 100% committed to protecting representative government. That's HUGE for us, especially as the Republicans and Russia work to destroy our democracy.
I will never support anyone for power who would approve election tampering to steal it away from the majority of voters. My disapproval of those who do support those candidates is disapproval for inadvertently (and shamefully for some, deliberately) empowering the right. And my fear is this weakness in democracy's great bastion. Where's the rock-hard commitment to battling the rise of the authoritarian right to protect their own rights, ALL of them!, by protecting their vote?
It's way past time to face up to how some on the farther left helped enable the Republican power theft in 2016. They knew they were pulling in the same direction on the same rope as the Republicans and Russian intelligence and they did it anyway. The consequences are dreadful, and it may now be too late to stop the authoritarian takeover we're watching. We'll find out.
Btw, have you noticed that there's been a great rise of antisemitism on the far left to march with that on the far right? A dangerous common element that's been used for evil purposes many times.
It's not coincidental to what's happening on the right, and we will also witness a deliberate fostering of this common passion if we can't turn this around. That's guaranteed.

(5,042 posts)I abhor all bigotry and intolerance, including and especially antisemitism.
But I'm not following the specifics as it relates to this primary. I know that a lot of people including the President have called Rep. Omar "un-American" and engaged in very typical anti-Muslim tropes up to and including calling her a terrorist.
I'm in no way saying Omar is the best rep in the House, but it's satisfying those bigoted assholes who troll her Twitter with horrible insults were spanked last night and will be again in November. And whomever poured 4 million bucks into this race is walking away very disappointed.
Thanks in advance.

(58,785 posts)and especially antisemitism" have found themselves on the wrong side of history by not paying attention to the details. I find it useful to try to imagine what candidates would do with power if all restraints on power were removed, or if they were surrounded by people who shared and encouraged their faults. Are they the type to draw strong, principled, ethical lines they won't cross? (Wouldn't supporting election tampering/theft answer that?)
As for the rest, to have good government we have to elect good people, period. Which brings my thoughts around to the happy prospect of good character and judgement in office, VP Biden and Senator Harris.

(5,042 posts)I'm not going to ask further about one, for your own sake. It will get you infracted.
But the second one....are you insinuating someone committed voter/election fraud in this race?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)attempted election theft among major Democratic races for anyone to endorse or just hope would succeed. And we'd of course know about any promises to do that.
Oh, sure, Russia continues on (without stopping since 2016) and reportedly had been trying to use Sanders and Gabbard to defeat Democrats, but Sanders said no to Russia and the GOP and yes to Biden/Democrats, and the voters negated Gabbard's usefulness. Of course it doesn't hurt that no one got anywhere near Biden the entire time, in spite of all hostile efforts to promote others, no doubt frustrating the plotters in Russia big time.
But it's really on point to note that the kind of high-quality Democratic candidates we virtually always have at the top of the ticket, like Biden and Harris and the rest this time, would never do that kind of thing. They just never would. And those are the quality of people we should be filling every office with.

When I looked, it seems she only sponsors or co-sponsors bills. I wouldn't expect a lot to become law until McTurtle and The Greatest, Most Dootiful Clown King are gone.
The excitement seems to be she won her primary when others said she wouldn't.
Do you disapprove of the freshman Congress Woman, or are you wanting to see her do more?

(58,785 posts)made, though.
Here in GA, the 14th district will have a Republican congresswoman who's suddenly become nationally famous for supporting QAnon. But locally, she's been known much longer for her vicious attitudes toward Jews and nonwhites, and that's what got her elected. Of course in that district. Her ugliness has no cover and needs none there.
Today's swell of acceptance and endorsement of antisemitism on the left is scary because too many who will vote to empower it imagine they're with us in the battle against the dangerous and ugly passions it is only one representation of. Some fellow warriors.
