Nick Saban leads Black Lives Matter march in Tuscaloosa

By Mike Rodak | mrodak@al.com

Alabama coach Nick Saban led a march Monday afternoon of hundreds of the university’s athletes, coaches and staff that was organized to protest racial injustice in the country.

Saban was at the front of a large crowd of players who walked from the Mal Moore athletic facility to Foster Auditorium’s schoolhouse door.

Senior running back Najee Harris walked next to Saban wearing a T-shirt reading, “Defend Black Lives; racial solidarity against this corrupt system.” Other players walked behind Saban holding a banner reading, “Black Lives Matter.” The march was also advertised on social media over the weekend by players with the hashtag #BLM.

“Today I’m like a proud parent,” Saban said at the end of the march. “I’m proud of our team, I’m proud of our messengers over here and I’m very proud of the message. I’m very proud of the ’All lives can’t matter until Black lives matter’ video that we did early on that I think had a very positive impact. That was something we did together as a team.

I don't like Saban as a coach, don't like the Crimson Tide, but I'm reassessing my opinion of those guys.

Good for Nick and the team doing this in the deeeeeep South!

I wonder if this will away anybody considering Tommy Tuberville, former Auburn coach, is running against Doug Jones.

6. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to help Ds get out the vote, but it might turn off some Rs

His recruiting prowess is legendary. And he does have far more to lose among the racist Alabama base. Thus, I believe the sentiment is genuine. We've come to a point where we all have to choose a side. Saban chose his.

But I will continue to cheer for any body playing the Tide.

And, by default, a Nick Saban hater forever, I find myself in the awkward position of defending him. That said, great job. We need more high-profile coaches from powerhouse teams taking a stand for BLM. Why more aren't coming forward says a lot.

From Huntsville to Mobile, white doughy guys are weighing their options....winning football team....or their racist inclinations? Be interesting to see which one wins.

What's more important - rooting for the Crimson Tide or being racist?

No one has been as consistently successful at Alabama as Saban. Not even Bear Bryant.
