(Reuters) - Facebook Inc will take aggressive measures to restrict the circulation of content on its platform if Novembers presidential election descends into chaos or violent civic unrest, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday citing a company executive.
The company had drawn up plans for how to handle a range of outcomes, including widespread civic unrest or "the political dilemmas" of having in-person votes counted more rapidly than mail-in ballots, the report on.ft.com/3hRRNdf said, citing an interview with Nick Clegg, Facebook's head of global affairs.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

(14,154 posts)So Fuckerberg is going to allow any kind of fake conspiracy theories disguised as "ads" to run rampant from now until Nov.
But IF all of that disinformation and falsehoods actually influences the chaos, which it will, THEN they will get off the couch and attempt to curtail it?

(42,676 posts)They could do anything they wanted. Like restricting users to 10 posts in a 24 hour period until they see the post-election landscape. But of course they'll wait and see. Reaction is too late.

(13,516 posts)Why not stop sowing chaos in the first place? I heard an interesting idea on the radio this morning. Facebook can institute "circuit breakers" like they have in the stock market. If particular content suddenly gets amplified a lot, the circuit breaker is tripped and the content is frozen until it is manually inspected and approved by a real person.

(9,263 posts)alternate ways of communications and information distribution. Internet CAN be shutdown/controlled. NSA already monitors all levels of electronic communications. Think about Brave New World and 1984 as worse case scenario if trump is reelected and GOP holds the Senate. We are moving quickly from a "what if" to "what will" happen

I agree that they are a menace to discourse, and would like to see them sink.
But there are other right wing echo chambers out there, and conservative snakes will slither over to them should something happen with FB.
