Alabama breaks absentee voting record 3 weeks before Election Day

Source: The Hill

Alabama has broken its record for casting absentee ballots during an election, and three weeks remain before Election Day.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R) said that as of Tuesday, 91,786 absentee ballots had been cast ahead of the Nov. 3 election. The previous record was 89,000 ballots cast over the course of the 2012 election cycle.

Merrill told the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce that he expects to have more than 200,000 ballots requested by election day, according to 280 Living, likely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Merrill said in July that any person who deems it unreasonable to vote in person because of the pandemic can check the box on their absentee ballot application that says "I have a physical illness or infirmity which prevents my attendance at the polls."

2. I'm going to donate to Doug Jones

I heard his internal polling shows he is one point ahead and is leading in early voting something like 78% to 22%.

3. He's already got my vote (and several donations)

I'm glad Alabama saw the light and made it easier to vote this year. While there's technically not 'early voting' we're able to cast an absentee ballot and turn it in at the county clerk's office. AND if you've cast an absentee ballot be certain to check online to make sure that it's been accepted.

Doug Jones is a far better man that Tuberville. Not only was he involved in the fraudulent investment scheme, but when he coached at Auburn it was discovered that several players were being paid. Either he knew about it and was either involved or looked the other way, or else he should have known and was a horrible administrator.

10. I donated to Jones last night

and a few times before last night.
He was the long shot several months ago. Hope it changes.
And I am not an AL voter! Just an admirer of this deserving politician.

8. I mean an independent poll by a major pollster

Not an internal one by the Jones campaign.

9. Here is 538's latest list

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/alabama/

My concern always has been the focus on the "we only need 4 seats" mantra that completely ignores Jones, whose seat would really need to be held too unless the assumption is that we would win both the WH and "4 seats" in the Senate (net gain 3 due to a Jones loss), and have Harris provide tie-breaker votes.

11. That poll having Jones ahead by 1 is likely an outlier

RCP didn't even list it, so not sure about that polling company.

As for many ignoring an Alabama loss, yup. There's also a strong possibility of an upset in Michigan.

12. 538 flagged that one with a " * " to indicate that one was a "partisan poll"

* Polls marked with an asterisk are partisan polls. Partisanship is determined by who sponsors the poll, rather than who conducts it. Polls are considered partisan if they’re conducted on behalf of a candidate, party, campaign committee, or PAC, super PAC, 501(c)(4), 501(c)(5) or 501(c)(6) organization that conducts a large majority of its political activity on behalf of one political party.

So yes, most likely an outlier.
