Pelosi sets 48-hour deadline to approve stimulus deal before the election

Source: CNN

By Chandelis Duster and Nicky Robertson,

(CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday she and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin must reach an agreement within 48 hours if they want to pass a coronavirus stimulus relief bill before Election Day.

"The 48 only relates to if we want to get it done before the election, which we do," Pelosi said in an interview on ABC's "This Week." "But we're saying to them we have to freeze the design on some of these things. Are we going with it or not? And what is the language."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Saturday there would be votes on stimulus measures, including a stand-alone Paycheck Protection Program bill to help small businesses, on Tuesday and Wednesday. But Democrats, who are expected to block McConnell's effort, have been pushing for a larger deal, banking on on-again, off-again talks that Pelosi has had with Mnuchin for months.

Pelosi's office told CNN Sunday that the 48 hours refers to the end of the day on Tuesday and that they need answers to key outstanding questions by then or they won't be able to get a bill passed before the election. Negotiations would still continue after Tuesday if a deal isn't reached, but it wouldn't get done in time before Election Day.

11. Moscow Mitch's bill is pure theater

and business immunity. It is not a serious bill and he has made no effort to look for compromise in the House package that he has been sitting on for months.

9. Moscow mitch isn't compromising at all. His joke bill won't go anywhere.

He's had two house-passed bills languishing in his inbox but he won't do it. Their "counter offer" here is a measly 15%. He's the one not compromising.

8. Oh! She has played them!

It's already delayed long enough for Trump's signed letter to citizens won't make it in time. Now she throws down a deadline! LOL

Mnuchin is fried because he failed to get it done on time. And Mitch's mini-mini bill is chicken feed.

Nancy Pelosi can vaporize these toadies while doing something popular and waving at the camera, and it's like the other side is standing there in their boxer briefs!

She will be studied for decades and decades.

13. It's either take Trump's 1.8 trillion offer or we wait until late January for her 2.2 trillion

I need a deal now. Maybe he can be pushed to 1.9 or 2 trillion, but we need to take it. I'm starving. I too want $600 a week in unemployment, but $500 a week tremendously helps me too. $0 does nothing for me.

It's a now or after Election Day.

19. If Trump loses then it won't be until January

He will be in no mode for any deal. If he wins, expect his offer to drop in price.

14. Better do it. When Trump loses he won't sign shit, he'll take the country down with him

He'll blame everyone for the fall of his empire for not voting for him, maybe start a war with China, just to fuck with Joe

16. Don't give Trump and McConnell a win now,

that could change the dynamics of the election, which is still close in swing states and in the Senate races.

The GOP has blocked any relief for months and they need to pay the political price for it.

After Trump/Turtle are gone we can pass all the stimulus we want and make it retroactive.

18. I'm worried about this tactic

You just know the press is going to report that Pelosi walked away from stimulus talks.
