Cruises can begin phased return starting Nov. 1 under new protocols, CDC says
Source: Washington Post
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday announced that it will lift its no-sail order on cruises, which banned large cruise ships from operating in U.S. waters since March. Effective Nov. 1., the ban will be replaced with a conditional sailing order, a phased return to cruising that includes new health protocols, such as mandatory testing and capacity restrictions. But that does not include passengers just yet.
The CDC says the initial phases are for crew only, which is to ensure adequate safety and health protocols through a series of mock voyages with volunteers who will play the role of passengers, said Martin Cetron, the CDC director for the division of global migration and quarantine. The CDC does not have a timeline for a return for passengers, Cetron said.
Considering the continued spread of covid-19 worldwide and increased risk of covid-19 on cruise ships, a careful approach is needed to safely resume cruise ship passenger operations, the CDC order says. After expiration of CDCs No Sail Order (NSO) on October 31, 2020, CDC will take a phased approach to resuming cruise ship passenger operations in U.S. waters.
The change comes after coronavirus cases in the United States hit a new daily high on Thursday, with 89,000 new infections reported.

Stupid and premature in my opinion.

(7,587 posts)We are rounding the corner towards 100,000 cases a day and they think its a good idea to put people on a cruise ship ?
Not sure who would be crazy enough to book them.

Considering how they turned that board into a political cesspool, at this point, all I can say is Bon voyage!.

I just saw an article this past week where some ships were already being dismantled for scrap (e.g., some from Carnival Cruises) in Turkey.

(9,084 posts)Even if the CDC SAYS that its safe enough to cruise this year, I dont trust red-state governors De Santis (FL), Abbott (TX) , or McMaster (SC) to have the numbers down in their ports of embarcation.

Personally, I think it'll be fine, because how could this be any worse than living in a city?
Besides, if you get Covid, you'll have someone to sue.

I don't.

(107,063 posts)Most aparment buildings I see have larger quarters than a cruise ship.
But your original phrase was cities. No matter how dense the city one generally has more space available than a cruise ship.
