Biden Plans to Roll Back Trump-Era Education Policies
Source: Wall Street Journal
As with environmental and immigration policy, President-elect Joe Biden has vowed to bring sweeping changes to education and to reverse some of the civil rights-related moves made under President Trump.
The current education secretary, Betsy DeVos, sought to bolster school-choice programs, proposed cuts to public-school funding and called for swift school reopenings during the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Biden, meanwhile, has said he wants to expand resources for public schools and has pledged to appoint a teacher to head the Education Department.
The DeVos administration has basically chosen to side on the powerful and not the vulnerable, not the marginalized, said Arne Duncan, former President Barack Obamas education secretary. Thats going to fundamentally change.
A spokeswoman from the Education Department, Angela Morabito, defended the departments current policies, especially on school choice, saying: There is no one less powerful and more marginalized than the student trapped in a failing, government-assigned school with no way out.

(2,753 posts)far away from this adminstration. Making strong neighborhood public schools, well-rounded curricula including universal Arts and Music and Civics, and supporting teachers the cornerstone of a real public education agenda. Giving public money to charter schools and virtual academies needs to end, as does standardized testing. Teacher tenure and academic freedom needs to be reinstated as well.
Keep Mr. Race to the Top sitting on the sidelines.

(51,432 posts)This should be mandatory so we don't get an anti-cabinet like we have now. All the cabinet secretaries are against what their dept is supposed to represent. They are there to destroy the dept. they lead.
I only vote for school board members who have had some teaching in their background.

(10,198 posts)Time to shit-can for-profit "Charter Schools" as well. 'Free' Public Education is the bedrock of our Nation. Public schooling is also a form of Socialization where students learn the means of interaction and communication. If a family chooses to "opt out" of Public Education, then they can foot the bill.
