Donald Trump commutes sentence of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick

Source: Detroit Free Press

On his way out the White House door, Donald Trump commuted the sentence of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, freeing him 20 years early for public corruption crimes he was convicted of in 2013, according to the White House.

Trump — who like Kilpatrick left office in disgrace, impeached twice during his four-year term — included Kilpatrick on his clemency list, setting him free, when no one else would give him that chance.

Reached before midnight, U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider said that he hadn't heard about the commutation, but stated: "If he did give him clemency, I would have never supported that."

Schneider, who has long argued that Kilpatrick should not be released early for his crimes, added:

"My position on the disgraced former mayor has not changed. Kwame Kilpatrick has earned every day he served in federal prison for the horrible crimes he committed against the people of Detroit. Thankfully, under Michigan law, he cannot hold state or local public office for 20 years after his conviction."

Disgusting.

Another grifter- convicted former Mayer of Detroit.

Birds of a feather flock together.

1. Kilpatrick is a low-life thug.

9. Crimetown Season 2 - Detroit

Season 2 focused on Detroit. Just, by coincidence, finished it yesterday afternoon - and completely surprised to see his name come up here today. [link:https://www.crimetownshow.com/|

The series spends quite a bit of time on Kilpatrick and it is fascinating seeing the rise and fall play out over the episodes. My impression: I was both angry at him for his inexcusable crimes, and sad about the wasted opportunity.

Related: the word "thug" has modern connotations that may not be what you're going for here. You might want to look into it.

2. The White House statement on the commutation says that the commutation is "strongly supported...

......by prominent members of the Detroit community" including "Diamond and Silk", which no doubt will come as something of a shock and great embarrassment to the community. Fercrissakes, Diamond and Silk?

3. Sounds like he'll be a new GOP mouthpiece going forward

He's effectively been planted as a "booby trap" and will probably be used to attack Biden as a supposed "voice of the AA community".

7. "They" define what the "law" is and who it applies to

and their idea of "order" is "owning and suppressing 'the libs'".

8. That's the bottom line here.

Trump probably didn't even know who Kwame was but the cash entered his bank accounts and that's all that mattered. Those of us who live in the Detroit area know Kwame was a disgraced crook.

P.S. I love how many of the reports re: Trump use the word "disgraced" to describe him. He should be disgraced and humiliated until the day he dies.

5. Trump views corruption as a victory

not a crime. Think about it.
