New York state Senate passes bill to repeal Cuomo's emergency executive powers
Source: CNN
Albany, New York (CNN)The New York State Senate passed a bill to repeal Gov. Andrew Cuomo's expanded emergency executive powers Friday.
The vote split straight down the party lines, with all 20 Republican senators saying the bill does not go far enough to curtail Cuomo's power and voting against it.
"Today, under this new legislation the governor will no longer be able to issue any new directives, period," said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. "In light of recent events, however, it is clear that we need to move toward a system of increased oversight, review and verification between the Legislature and the executive branch, and also limit the powers granted to the governor."
The State Assembly is still in session and is expected to pass the same bill later Friday.

(15,325 posts)And that gdamn hellhole of a shitshow would have been handled far better by any of those who voted against Cuomo's Ex orders today?
What a bunch of overpaid elitist chumps.
They really believe NY will be far better off when their State is governed by an outsider, unlike a loyal NYer, or by a Republican who will lend a helping hand to Trump's illegal mob business in the Blue State?
Man, ppl are really stupid anymore 🙄

(7,817 posts)authority to respond to events. It could be argued that the legislature is taking the Governor's powers away without authority to do so and creating a situation of micromanagement by the legislature where none is called for. There is a purpose to the separation of powers in NY like there is in federal government. I suspect the NY supreme court will rule that this is going about 3 steps too far.
The point of a deliberative body is to weigh the impact of things and consider the options and outcomes, and THEN decide what policy is supported. You cannot do that in an emergency. I can see that some kind of balance needs to be struck but this is not the way to do it.

(7,397 posts)The legislature/assembly is realizing he is done politically and are either gonna make him resign or push him out. His behavior is no surprise, but seems like the majority of the party up there is ready to write him off and move on.
