Arclight Cinemas And Pacific Theatres Won't Be Reopening

Source: Deadline

The last thing we needed to hear as the box office and exhibition are rebounding from the pandemic was a piece of bad news, but word spread like wildfire in distribution and exhibition circles Monday that the Arclight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres won’t be reopening. The chain, owned by Decurion, has issued a statement — read it below.

Last week, I was hearing that the chain was shooting for a Memorial Day weekend reopening with A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella. Now those hopes look dashed, and at an unfortunate time because it’s expected that Los Angeles County could have movie theaters operating at 100% capacity by then — well before California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s June 15 wide-open order.

Decurion’s crown jewel is the Hollywood Arclight multiplex on Sunset Boulevard and its 58-year old Cinerama Dome, which made a big cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and remains many filmmakers’ favorite venue. The Hollywood Arclight is also one of the highest-grossing movie theaters in the nation; again, a huge blow to the industry and the L.A. market, which is in its fourth week of a robust reopening.

Oh man, this one hurts. I've been to the Cinerama Dome on Sunset too many times to count and seen some really awesome movies there. Damn this virus!

I'm hoping they can restructure, or at least that someone will take over the Dome. The Cinerama up here, which is the only other place in the United States capable of showing the classic old three-strip Cinerama productions, closed for "renovations" just around the time COVID hit our shores, and they announced in May that they would be remaining closed for the indefinite future.

This is what happens when mega corporations buy movie chains, then drop them when they don't make enough money. Speaking of which...is Arclight going to pay back all that covid relief money? They shut down last March, laid everyone off and never reopened. The point of the relief money was to help the business stay open. Doesn't sound like this business intended to stay open.

2. At least 1/2 of the blame goes to the Ex-guy and his crew who disabled the response team, lied

about the problem and how bad it was, and then delayed doing anything while they tried to corner the market on PPE and future vaccines while denying resources to actual first responders. They created the basis for the super spreading of the pandemic and denied the science repeatedly even while the rest of the world was shouting about it. They are responsible for the dangerous behavior of the anti-mask and anti-vax people along with the overloading of medical services, funereal services, and the economic disaster that has wiped out so many features of our local culture.

That was back in the early '90's.

This is really sad, but given our current circumstances, not surprising.
