U.S. Tells Citizens to Get Out of India as Covid Crisis Deepens
Source: Bloomberg
The U.S. government told its citizens to leave India as soon as possible as the countrys Covid-19 crisis worsens at an astonishing pace.
In a Level 4 travel advisory --- the highest issued by the State Department -- U.S. citizens were told not to travel to India or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so. There are 14 direct daily flights between India and the U.S. and other services that connect through Europe, the department said.
Indian authorities and hospitals are struggling to cope with unprecedented Covid infections and deaths. Official data on Thursday showed new cases rose by a staggering 379,257 over the prior 24 hours, another record, while 3,645 additional lives were lost. More than 204,800 people have died. The South Asian nation now has the worlds fastest-growing caseload with 18.4 million confirmed instances. The virus has gripped Indias populace with a severity not seen in its first wave.
Mass funeral pyres, lines of ambulances outside overcrowded hospitals and desperate pleas on social media for oxygen underscore how grossly unprepared Indias federal and state governments are to tackle the latest coronavirus wave.

(127,312 posts)when Americans were encouraged to return home from Europe, en masse, unbeknownst at the time when many were asymptomatic. And for those who were symptomatic, a variety of "symptoms" were completely dismissed as not being valid "symptoms".
And this is happening just when everything is being thrown open with the fantasy that the vaccine is a "shield".
We're fucked.
The one fortunate thing is that the travel back and forth to India is probably a fraction of what occurred between the U.S. and European countries, so we're talking about a much smaller number of people in general.

(45,261 posts)in a culture where several generations live together and the population is so high. The best people can do it wear masks and try to get the few vaccines available. So more contagious variants are a major problem in places like that. People still pull down their masks to eat, drink, show ID, or it's too hot and stuffy.

(1,805 posts)From the State Dept. Travel page:
Effective January 26, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will require all air passengers two years of age and over entering the United States (including U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents) to present a negative COVID-19 test, taken within three (3) calendar days of departure, or proof of recovery from the virus within the last 90 days. Airlines must confirm the negative test result or proof of recent recovery for all passengers prior to boarding. Airlines must deny boarding of passengers who do not provide documentation of a negative test or recovery.
