New law makes inmates choose electric chair or firing squad

FILE - This March 2019, file photo, provided by the South Carolina Department of Corrections shows the state's electric chair in Columbia, S.C. South Carolina House members may soon debate whether to restart the state's stalled death penalty with the electric chair and whether to add a firing squad to the execution methods. The state's House Judiciary Committee approved a bill Tuesday, April 27, 2021, that would let condemned inmates choose death by being shot in the heart by several sharpshooters. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has signed into law a bill that forces death row inmates for now to choose between the electric chair or a newly formed firing squad in hopes the state can restart executions after an involuntary 10-year pause.

Two inmates who have exhausted their appeals immediately sued, saying they can't be electrocuted or shot since they were sentenced under a prior law that made lethal injection the default execution method.

South Carolina had been one of the most prolific states of its size in putting inmates to death. But a lack of lethal injection drugs brought executions to a halt.

McMaster signed the bill Friday with no ceremony or fanfare, according to the state Legislature's website. It's the first bill the governor decided to deal with after nearly 50 hit his desk Thursday.

5. Because death from lethal injection or gas are too humane...

...how bout death by guillotine?

Given all of the apparently available choices, depending on which state you've been condemned to death in:

Electric Chair, Firing Squad, Lethal Injection, Gas Chamber, Guillotine...?

Are There Others? Oh yeah, just ask MF45's bestie, Kim Jong Poo (?) I forget his name since Twitler is gone.

Didn't he execute folks using rocket launchers?

Personally, I'd prolly go for the French Disconnection choice.

GQPers will be the death of us all, one way or another.

They are a moneydeathcult.

11. Problem With Lethal Injection Is...

That the manufacturers of the drugs used for it have stopped selling the drugs to the states. They were getting lots of bad press/rep over the use of their product in this manner (the drugs have other uses, like anesthesia, etc), and didn't want the hassle. If I'm not mistaken, some of the MFGs were/are headquartered in Europe...

End it NOW!

We should be pressuring Biden to do this, at least on the Federal level.

8. Somehow seems related to the 5th Amendment of self-incrimination

How can one be forced to choose a means of self-demise? Forced to depart voluntarily? This is fraught with inconsistencies.

10. South Cackalacki

I hated that place when I lived there. It was so damned backwards, and it just keeps regressing: Making the inmates choose the chair or firing squad? What happens if they refuse to pick one (I certainly would)?

The electric chair? I mean, what could go wrong here?

Firing squad? Puuuh-lease! Again, what could possibly go wrong with this one?

I envision lots of botched executions coming...

29. If I was on death row I would refuse to choose, and file a lawsuit that choosing was cruel...

...or that I was incompetent to choose...
...or that my attorney was not good council since they didn't have coursework in firing squads...
...you get the idea....

...just another avenue to waste years in the courts.

21. The ethics of the death penalty aside...

...I would rather be executed by a firing squad than any other method except the pills or whatever they give people to take home in places where euthanasia is legal.

Being shot in the head or multiple shots all over you is quick and painless. The other methods are faulty.

30. Someone needs to test that ancient looking electric chair to make sure it is in good working order.

I recommend, Gov. Henry McMaster.

We already know who's going to be first in line for the firing squad jobs.

Who can picture how someone does that job and then plays with the kids when they get home?
