Trump charged Secret Service nearly $10,200 in May for agents' rooms
Source: Washington Post
Former president Donald Trumps golf club in Bedminster, N.J., charged the Secret Service nearly $10,200 for guest rooms used by his protective detail during Trumps first month at the club this summer, newly released spending records show.
The records released by the Secret Service in response to a public-records request show that the ex-president has continued a habit he began in the first days of his presidency: charging rent to the agency that protects his life.
Since Trump left office in January, U.S. taxpayers have paid Trumps businesses more than $50,000 for rooms used by Secret Service agents, records show.
The Washington Post reported previously that Trumps Mar-a-Lago Club where he lived from January, when he left the White House, to early May charged the Secret Service more than $40,000 so that agents could use a room near Trump.

And the grift continues.

the fact is that the Secret Service should pay fair market price for their rooms. I'm willing to overlook the fact that TFG is profiting from this bizarre situation because if the Secret Service fails to do its job then TFG will become a martyr.

(90,556 posts)When you or I go looking for a hotel room we never pay rack rate, i.e. the advertised rate. There is always, always a discount to be had. For groups and for regularly recurring visits, you bet there is a discount to be had for rooms and meals.
But not the Big Grifter. The people who protect his ass day and night have to pay him without mercy and be treated like the busboys.

(111,938 posts)so I understand your point about offering discounts. This is another example that shows what may be legal is not necessarily what is ethical.

he wouldn't need to charge the S.S. for room and board.

(50,528 posts)We had two other Republican presidents in recent years who spent a shit ton of time at their own properties, Reagan and Bush 43. Neither of them charged the Secret Service rent.
Congress needs to write a law requiring presidents and former presidents to comp rooms in their own properties to the Secret Service, and provide them food at cost if the president owns food service facilities. This wouldnt claw back the money Trump already stole from the government, but it would stop the steal thats currently going on.

(31,936 posts)What we do know is that the SS has made tens of thousands of dollars in improvements at other president's properties for their needs. Those improvement stay after the need for the SS is gone. It goes with the territory.

(23,947 posts)...as to be TNTC - too numerous too count), this particularly bugs the hell out of me. How dare he charge the Secret Service when they are tasked with being willing to effing DIE to protect his sorry, unworthy ass.
If I had been in the Secret Service when Trump was sworn in, I would have had to quit. I wouldn't stand out in the rain for that POS, let alone risk my life.
