Eric Clapton won't play venues if they require vaccinations
Source: NBC News
"Following the PM's announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021, I feel honor bound to make an announcement of my own: I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show," Clapton said via statement posted onto architect, film producer and anti-vaxxer Robin Monotti Graziadei's Telegram account.
The news follows U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement Tuesday that as restrictions on social gatherings lift, nightclubs must require guests to show a Covid Pass from the U.K.'s National Health Service upon entry for everyone over the age of 18.
Clapton has been releasing anti-vaccination and anti-lockdown statements and songs for close to a year now. In December 2020, Clapton joined fellow classic rocker turned anti-vaxxer Van Morrison on his song, "Stand and Deliver." The song features lyrics including, "Do you wanna be a free man / Or do you wanna be a slave?" and "Dick Turpin wore a mask too."

(46,803 posts)did receive the AstraZeneca vaccine and had such a severe reaction that he wondered if he would even be able to play the guitar again.
In his case, his attitude is very subjective and based on his own personal experience. I think anyone who has had a serious reaction to a vaccine might be biased. He doesn't appear to be the average anti-vaxxer kook, just unlucky apparently. I don't know what Van Morrison's problem is though.
Obviously, people's odds are much better being vaccinated, but occasionally there will be those who do get sick from a vaccine and that will affect their objectivity. I understand how he feels, but encouraging others not to get the vaccine because of his experience could cause a lot of unnecessary pain and suffering.
C Moon
(12,188 posts)But instead, he gets one, has a bad reaction, survives, and tells others not to get a vaccine...let them suffer a painful COVID death.
But I think it is hard to be objective when it happens to you. I don't agree with what he is doing, but I can understand how he came to feel that way. I was just making the point that Clapton was not a typical whacko anti-vaxxer - the "Bill Gates is planting microchips in people's arms" type. Meanwhile, our attitudes towards anything is often colored by own personal experiences.

(14,516 posts)person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, solo, as a member of Cream, and as a member of the Yardbirds.
Now, I am crazy about the old British Invasion - Beatles, Stones, Manfred Mann, Animals and others, including Zep, Pink Floyd, and later, Elton John.
Now, like many of the old British rockers - who all knew each other - Clapton considered that his roots were in the old R & B songs by black artists like Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Memphis Slim and others. These guys were crazy about this music. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Clapton and others got their start playing skiffle and were heavily influenced by these black artists.
Back in the days of segregation, radio stations did not play this blues music because it was performed by black artists. So, when guys like Clapton came along in groups like the Yardbirds, and later Cream, the American kids literally went crazy for it. You can argue that most of these British Invasion artists were influenced by the old 1920s and 30s blues. Consider that much of Zep's music, like 'When the Levee Breaks' are modified covers of earlier American black artists. For example, When the Levee Breaks was first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The song reflected the black experience around the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
So, anyway, Clapton started with the Yardbirds and Cream, but went on to Derek and the Dominoes, and Blind Faith, and later had a long solo career. He performed with the likes of Jimmy Page, Ginger Baker, John Mayall, Bob Marley and even Zappa. He performed Cocaine, Layla and many other mega hits of that era.
It is sad to me that this guy is now an anti vaxxer and possibly a right wing nut. Very sad. He was part of the soundtrack of my own youth.
By the way, if you are into women's groups, there is a great busker band from Ireland called Dea Matrona. They play some covers of old rock and roll, but they also have written a number of really good songs. The music industry has become such an 'industry' that it is really hard for creative new people to get recognized. Here is a link to a live show they did at a place called Whelen's in Dublin:
Especially notice that Molly plays keyboards, guitar and bass. Orlaith plays guitar and bass, and Molly's little sister plays the drums. I like them because they are really sound musically. Plus they got their start busking - that's how I found them. I was searching for versions of Crossroads, a favorite of mine, and I ran across their video, and got hooked. It's modern because they probably aren't even 20 yet - the drummer is 16. But it is old fashioned Rock and Roll. Really good.

A 2016 story in Classic Rock Magazine quotes the then 71-year-old rock icon that peripheral neuropathy may end his career. Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying health issue such as age-related hearing loss, and past ear injury or a circulatory system disorder.
