McConnell reactivates his connection to Biden -- with a sharp debt warning

Source: Politico

The Senate minority leader on Monday morning prodded the president to talk his party into raising the debt ceiling without the GOP, the first step in what may become a complicated back-and-forth. McConnell has warned for months that he won't supply the votes to raise the nation's borrowing limit even as the risk of a U.S. default spikes, and he reiterated in a new letter to Biden that he won't help Democrats out of the jam.

“I respectfully submit that it is time for you to engage directly with congressional Democrats on this matter,” McConnell told Biden in his letter, a copy of which POLITICO obtained. “Your lieutenants in Congress must understand that you do not want your unified Democratic government to sleepwalk toward an avoidable catastrophe when they have had nearly three months’ notice to do their job.”

The letter, delivered to the White House on Monday, also cites Biden’s past opposition to debt increases while in the minority. McConnell summarized it this way: “The president’s party had to take responsibility for a policy agenda which you opposed. Your view then is our view now.”

...

“Republicans would vote to suspend the debt ceiling through the end of next year if the president abandoned the plans for this $3.5 trillion [bill],” Collins said in an interview.

that the repukes spent a ton on their pet projects and tax breaks for the rich. Then the Dems came to power and the repukes complained about the deficit........that they created!!! The Dems would then whittle down the deficit (like what Clinton did and created a surplus). NOw Biden is spending and McT KNOWS he will be stuck the next time the repukes get into power. No money to spend on their pet projects.. YMMV and that's the way I see it...

Ah, Susan the answer to that deal is no. So if the Republicans crash America's economy it
will be the Democrats fault because they support the ideas that Joe Biden ran and won on?

MxConnell thinks he has Sienema (sp?)on board to kill the Reconciliation bill to get the debt ceiling lifted. Mancin is wavering, but she is not. She won't even talk to Democrats to say what she wants, because, IMO, she wants to hurt us so won't tell the truth. Rumor has it she will switch parties and run for office as a repug in 2022 and the way she's acting, it could be true? Whatever her intentions, she's killing the party & Bidens agenda with her "cute" act.

We can only use reconciliation once in FY22. And apparently, we’re going to have to do it by October 18. That’s our timeframe for coming to agreement on the 3.5 reconciliation bill.

Thing is, that was her original plan, to run as gqp, but they didn’t want her. Nothing has changed, she’s a bisexual woman, they will never support her.

She’s going to be done post ‘24.

8. Biden blasts McConnell, GOP on 'dangerous' debt ceiling gambit
Mon Oct 4, 2021, 01:23 PM
Oct 2021

President Biden warned Monday that the U.S. may default on its debt for the first time in history if Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) continues to block Democratic attempts to raise the federal borrowing limit.

Speaking to reporters following a Monday speech on the fiscal standoff, Biden said he cannot guarantee that the U.S. will be able to pay its bills past Oct. 18 if GOP senators are unwilling to clear a path to keep the country solvent.

"I cannot believe that will be the end result, because the consequences are so dire," Biden said. "But can I guarantee it? If I could, I would. But I can't."

Biden's warning followed a speech in which he excoriated Republicans for closing off every pathway Democrats have used to suspend the federal borrowing limit and accused the GOP of playing a "reckless, dangerous" political game with the U.S. economy.

Biden rips GOP for not voting to raise debt limit: 'It's hypocritical, dangerous and disgraceful'

President Joe Biden on Monday slammed Republicans for opposing efforts to raise the debt limit as the nation is two weeks away from being unable to pay its debts for the first time in its history.

In a speech from the White House, Biden put the blame on Republicans for refusing to join with Democrats in raising the debt limit to pay for past debts incurred in the past. Congressional Republicans are steadfastly refusing to supply any votes to raise the debt limit, Biden said they should vote on bipartisan basis to pay for bills for which both parties are responsible.

"Not only are Republicans refusing to do their job, but they're threatening to use their power to prevent us from doing our job -- saving the economy from a catastrophic event. I think quite frankly it's hypocritical, dangerous and disgraceful," Biden said.

Congress has until October 18 to increase the country's borrowing limit, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned lawmakers last week, a date that is now just two weeks away. Republicans, led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have steadfastly opposed raising the debt ceiling, despite pleas and warnings from officials and watchdogs about the disastrous consequences of inaction.

Why else would turtle be asking the president to do this if he wasn’t beginning to feel the pressure, knowing the blame will fall on them. The gqp tired before with President Obama. It didn’t work then either.

16. Democrats can actually do *3* reconciliation bills per fiscal year
Mon Oct 4, 2021, 06:15 PM

One that deals with "spending" (that's the $3.5 trillion one), one that deals with "revenue" (that's where "someone" hint hint can repeal the tax cuts for the rich that Turtle rammed through in 2017 by the same type of "revenue" reconciliation process), and one can be done for the "debt ceiling".

Each type can only be invoked once a year however they can be combined as 2 types together or all 3 types in one conference report legislation.

I am thinking Democrats wanted to save that debt ceiling type perhaps until the end of this current new fiscal year (September-ish 2022) before the election (perhaps in combo with a revenue/tax one), rather than use it now.

I do know that use of that right now seems to be a choice of last resort at this point but am not sure of what the long-term strategy is other than trying to get as much done before the 2022 election as they can.

but, if we default, and no one gets paid, then I think I have one more SS payment I can get in before the big disaster.

All these rich SOBs who run the government. They don't have to worry...they certainly don't have the national interest at heart.

Honestly, the government is at war with each other. Where do We The People fit in? I'm so sick of it. Can someone who knows please explain what this all means?
