Luchiano Lewis was sentenced Thursday to the maximum of nine years to life in prison for his role in the murder of Barnard College freshman Tessa Majors.
Majors, 18, was stabbed to death on Dec. 11, 2019, in upper Manhattan's Morningside Park, just off the campus of Columbia University.
Lewis, who was 14 at the time and charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree robbery last month.

The two other teens arrested in connection to the slaying were 16-year-old Rashaun Weaver, who has pleaded not guilty, and a 13-year-old juvenile who pleaded guilty and is serving his sentence.
Lewis said the three middle school friends plotted to rob people in the park and pinned the idea on Weaver. Prosecutors said Weaver wielded the knife.

A 13-year-old has been arrested and charged in the stabbing death of Barnard College freshman Tessa Majors in a New York City park, according to multiple senior law enforcement officials.
The teen faces charges of second-degree murder, robbery and a weapons-related charge, the officials said. His specific role in the death was not immediately clear.
The juvenile was apprehended at about 11 p.m. Thursday, and as of Friday was not being charged as an adult.
Investigators are seeking two other people whom they believe had a role in the attack.
Majors, 18, was stabbed repeatedly in Morningside Park, not far from Barnard's campus, before 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the New York Police Department.

Majors, who was from Virginia, played in a band and had recently played her first gig in New York City, according to her Instagram. She graduated from St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville this year before beginning at Barnard, according to an obituary in the Augusta Free Press, where she interned in spring.
"Tess was a light that shined brightly and our hearts will never be the same," the Majors family said in a statement. "She was very special and very loved."

Justice is the most that can be hoped for in this situation. I think as far as it can be, the state achieved justice.

(20,044 posts)The parents of the boy he killed have protested his release at every one of his parole hearings. I don't think he should have walked free, but I fear the length his incarceration will make it that much harder for him to make something of his pitiful life.
And BTW, his mother took antiseizure medication for her epilepsy when she was pregnant with him which cause his oddly shaped ears and learning disabilities. That along with his bright red hair made him the target of relentless bullying. He was physically, and possibly sexually, abused by his step/adoptive father. All this came out in the trial, but he was still given 9 to life.
