ANCIENT OLYMPIA. Greece (AP) Three activists protesting human rights abuses in China sneaked into the archaeological site where the flame lighting ceremony for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was being held Monday and ran toward the newly lit torch holding a Tibetan flag and a banner that read No genocide games.
The protesters managed to enter the grounds and attempted to reach the Temple of Hera, where the ceremony was being held. They were thrown to the ground by police and detained.
How can Beijing be allowed to host the Olympics given that they are committing a genocide against the Uyghurs? one protester said, referring to the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Chinas northwest region of Xinjiang.
The flame was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics in southern Greece under heavy police security.

(128,458 posts)because the first thing that came to my mind was - "Aren't the winter games like, 'months away'"?
This disruption happened in Greece and they are just starting the torch relay journey to Beijing. I was initially thinking the disruption took place in China.

(53,947 posts)And if there was a stopover, who ever's carrying it has to run around in circles on the tarmac till the plane takes off again
I remember back in 1996 when they had the Atlanta Olympics, the route came through here in Philly (including doing a "Rocky run" up the steps of the Art Museum. But since they got here late at night, they actually booked a hotel room for it to stay in overnight, and then left early the next morning.
From what I understand, there is some special lantern that they transfer the flame to when not running with it on a torch.

In 50 years we'll think of what's happened to Hong Kong, the Uighurs, and even Taiwan in late 2022 as perfectly normal.

(6,457 posts)Odd how this was over the flame of sportsmanship.
I want to add to the response detailing all the unfriendly acts China has committed lately. Don't forget that hypersonic missile that they recently tested. Also, don't forget their boycott of the climate summit, joined by their buddy, Russia.
How many Winter Olympians will sit out bug-infested Beijing in favor of safety?
