Australia Investigates New COVID-19 Variant Found in South Africa

Source: Reuters

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia on Friday said it was investigating the newly identified COVID-19 variant spreading in South Africa and warned it may close its borders to travellers from the African nation if risks from the new strain rise.

South African scientists are concerned the new variant could evade the body's immune response and make it more transmissible as it has a "very unusual constellation" of mutations

1. Another Reason It Was So Wrong To Treat Covid As A Political Issue Rather Than A Health Issue

The dilly-dally and finger pointing allowed the virus to spread virtually unimpeded for far too long. It needed to be all hands on deck from the get-go. As it is there have been more deaths in 2021 that their was in 2020 and we have had vaccines for most of 2021. A neighbor that was unvaccinated came down with Covid this summer and died after a 13 week battle against the disease. 13 weeks!

Now we wait and see what kind of pop Black Friday will bring. Shoppers should wear masks but few will.

4. At this point when the media reports that there is a new variant its like reporting that

there has been another shark attack.
I mean its a virus and we are going to see variants and some will be more contagious and some will not but unless it suddenly mutates into being actually more deadly than it is now its not something new.

6. A significant portion of the world refuse to get vaccinated. Small Pox was eradicated because of

vaccines, and polio is very close to be eliminated if not already

The problem is the unvaccinated

7. A jump in my infectivity is a de facto jump in deaths

Because even if the death rate remains the same, the larger number of infected by the more contagious strain create more deaths overall.

Doubly bad if it can create more breakthrough cases.

8. Did you take into account improvements in treatment though?

After all as time has passed treatment regimens have evolved as doctors know what they are dealing with now.

9. No, but large areas of the planet still don't have access to even basic care

Delta killed 4 MILLION in India this spring, largely because large populations had zero care available. What happens if Nu hits them even harder?

And if hospitals in the US and Europe are overwhelmed and our already exhausted health care workers are finally broken by a variant even more transmissible than Delta, we won't have the facilities and personnel to administer treatment.

10. The Omicron variant likely evades

the mono clonal anti-body treatments.

and possibly all of the vaccines. It is more infectious than Delta.

But lets see what the data says... especially about the pathogenicity ( how sick it makes you ).

5. It isn't just Australia, scientis all over the world from WHO are very concerned about this. The

futures are down big tonight because of the concern

I am so sick and tired of these anti-vax/anti-science jackasses who won’t vaccinate or wear masks which could finally put an end to it
