Russia to decide on recognising Ukrainian regions on Monday, Putin says

Source: Reuters

MOSCOW, Feb 21 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said Russia would decide whether to recognise the independence of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine later on Monday, a step that would be certain to further inflame a tense standoff with the West and Kyiv.

The Kremlin leader made the remark at the end of a dramatic session of his Security Council that was broadcast on television after the heads of two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine appealed to Putin to recognise their independence.

"A decision will be taken. Today," Putin said.

The Moscow-backed regions have been thrust to the forefront of a mounting international crisis over a Russian military buildup that has fuelled fears that Moscow may be on the brink of invading Ukraine. The Kremlin denies such plans.

their two breakaway regions that they are no longer recognized by Ukraine as being part of Ukraine?
Believe they broke away because they viewed themselves as being more Russian than Ukrainian.
Let them go away, maybe Putin will, for a while anyway.

These two "breakaway" regions are just two of eight or nine oblasts with significant pro-Russian protests/conflict.

For an answer to your question... we could turn to Neville Chamberlain.

@MalcolmNance
Putin will declare a Donetsk and Luhansk « independent nations » and in the same breath they will officially request Russian military assistance. Within the hour MANY more Russian occupation forces will move into the two provinces. According to
@POTUS
that’s an invasion.

Also, from Guardian: Ukraine’s former defence minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk said any attempt by Russia to expand the territory controlled by pro-Moscow separatists would mean a full-scale war with Ukraine.

After the meeting in Russia Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba warned against formal recognition of the separatist regions and said he has asked UN Security Council members to discuss “de-escalation” and “practical steps to guarantee the security of Ukraine”.

Europe doesn't want Ukraine in NATO and it requires a unanimous vote from all NATO countries.

I think Putin is using the NATO thing as an excuse to slowly chip off bits of Ukraine.

This means they wouldn't be able to contribute to NATO, while NATO has to support them.

Sorry, no link — don’t subscribe and getting this off another computer.

This gives Putin the excuse he needs to invade.
