Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins dies after being hit by car

Source: Yahoo! Sports

According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins has died at the age of 24 after being hit by a car in south Florida. This information came to Schefter per Haskins’ agent Cedric Saunders

Haskins joined the Steelers before the 2021 season and looked to be in the mix to battle for the starting quarterback job this season after the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger.

Details are scarce at the moment but we will share any updates we have as they come in. For now, our hearts go out to Haskins’ family during this time. Haskins played his college football at Ohio State and was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Washington Commanders.

Presumably Haskins was in south Florida by invitation of Mitch Trubisky who had invited his new teammates to his home to work out and get to know each other.

1. Terrible news for many

The family of course, who watched him finally achieve his dream with a future of wealth and fame.
and the fans who were hoping for a better season.

I'm a Browns fan with sympathy and sadness.

2. .

To an Athlete Dying Young
BY A. E. HOUSMAN

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

19. I like Housman a lot, but for this poem I prefer the satire, "What, still alive at twenty--two...."

3. I know nothing of the circumstances, but pedestrian v MV deaths are dramatically on rise nationwide

As one who frequently walks with my pup pre-dawn, I've noticed a dramatic increase in those who in the early morning run red lights--even with me in a lit pedestrian crosswalk or don't even glance when turning right on red or making a left turn with pedestrian light lit. I was given a red/blue flashing police light to wear by a concerned local community police officer (who took a recent complaint) and admittedly that gets more attention, but it doesn't seem to matter how many lights I wear nor how much highly reflective clothing. Hell, it isn't much better (and is in some cases worse) in broad daylight.

6. Drivers texting?

So dangerous to pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycle riders. I do not drive much at all after retirement, and if I do, just local in rural WNC. Had to go to Asheville Guitar Center yesterday. The driving on I-40 and 240 around the business district was full of idiots driving, no signals, whip in and out, merging onto a highway, forget it, they believe they have Right of Way. It’s like a bunch of spoiled kids in a go cart NASCAR ride. Spoiled adults in huge ass SUV’s and no rules apply to me attitude. I get more angry on that drive than if I watched 24 hours of Hannity straight. Lawlessness is so today.

9. As a cyclist, I've certainly noticed an increased danger lately

I've had a lot more near-misses lately. Cars don't keep their lanes, run through stop signs, turn right on red without looking sufficiently, etc.

I don't know if there's one specific cause: vehicles are bigger (oversized and overpowered) and have poorer sight lines, new cars seem to all come with non-tactile touch screen display interfaces now, smart phone notifications, whatever. Also, alcohol and other drug consumption has apparently risen steeply.

I think it all adds up mostly to poor attention spans these days, inability to concentrate on the task at hand, etc.

I suspect technology is turning us all into inattentive, belligerent morons.

11. How horribly sad. He must have worked so hard, so much dedication to his craft and with lots of

promise and good fortune ahead of him.

I feel so bad for his family.

This is also a reminder of how life is so fragile and temporary.

My brief experience of nearly being hit by a speeding SUV a few years ago still scares the heck out of me.

12. Hit by a 'dump truck'

“Dump truck: usually open-topped truck having a body that can be tilted to discharge its contents, as sand or gravel, through an open tailgate.”

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was killed in an early morning crash with a dump truck on Saturday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 6:40 a.m., he was trying to cross Interstate 595 and collided with an oncoming dump truck, according to FHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Haskins, who’s originally from New Jersey, became one of the most sought-after high school quarterbacks in the country at Bullis in Potomac, Maryland, and committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes. After two years on the bench in Columbus, Haskins was one of the best quarterbacks in the nation ... In his NFL career, Haskins started 13 games and completed 60.1% of his passes for 2,804 yards, 12 touchdowns and 14 interception

14. Why in the world was he crossing an interstate in the dark?

That isn't a pedestrian area, especially where he was hit. He had no business doing that, unless he was drunk or someone threw him out of a car.

I know that area very well, a friend lives about a mile away.

young people don't think about risk the same way us older folks do. He was a top athlete as well. He must've thought he could make it across.

His flight was departing from Ft Lauderdale. No info on why he was walking, but speculation is that his car broke down.
