(2,022 posts)Been thinkin on this business of putting military type weapons in the hands of the kid next door. When did it really take off?
Just guessing here, but maybe when the DOD stopped relying mostly on boots on the ground and started to go with more tech and looking to remotely controlled weapons? Anybody have data on a drop in sales of pray and spray rifles to the DOD during the migration to more remote tech weapons?
Gun manufacturers seemed to target police departments for their sales and marketing programs. Lots of drugs hit the streets in the inner cities as a means of funding the Iran Contra ops under Reagan, right? Check my memory, will ya? I'm old and may miss some of the timelines.
When George H.W. Bush got the top job, things really got bad with drugs and gang violence. Cops needed more and bigger guns. The manufacturers were happy to make up losses in military market via showing cops the new toys. Hmm, seems like a plan?
Then a lot of folks started noticing their beat cops looked more like elite military units and started asking questions like, 'just who are these guys at war with?'' The ban on certain weapons came along and things cooled down.
Ban gone, Russian money flows into the NRA which lathers and rinses it, then passes it along to GOP pols to make sure nothing slows the sales of weapons of war to the average American on the street. Ramp up fear of 'the other' and 'the gubbmint gun grabbers' and the rubes will go deep into debt to buy more guns than they could ever fire while playing Wolverines.
Drones and other 'smart weapons' are relieving a lot of military personnel from direct contact with enemy combatants. Hey, sales are down. Flip the GO button on all those GOP pols paid by the NRA and not only sell guns, but block ANY sane gun safety laws, or even research into the damage done to society by so many weapons of war in the hands of unregulated militias and 'lone wolves'.
When things go wrong, the GOP pols can always blame school doors.
Oh, and I guess I need to do the avatar thingy. Pardon my newbie.

(35,812 posts)I'd suggest you also fit militarized police departments somewhere into this last part of your partial map of the dark history of pols. Because militarized police now have their feet in both cultures -- one in gun culture, and another in white supremacist/extreme religious fundamentalist culture -- that seek to tear down majority rule democracy, and civilian morale, behind their cover of lone wolves or school doors. As a front line of law, order, peace and tranquility, police are weak and have lost honor in this society.
Welcome to DU.

(2,022 posts)And thanks for the welcome. Lurked around once and a while, had friends who used to be here during the bush years and they spoke of the site. Seems a well thought out and well organized place for people to pick their strong suit topics and work for positive outcomes.

No, I think I'll go back to the human sacrifice theory. Their god demands the blood of innocents.

They really need to space out the mass murders a bit. To the extent required,
