Hurricane Ian strengthens to Category 2 storm
Source: CNN
Ian is now a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale, according to a 5 p.m. ET update from the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. The eye of the storm is located around 150 miles southeast of the western tip of Cuba and Ian is moving north-northwest near 13 mph, the center said.
Florida could start feeling Ians wrath as early as Tuesday, with hurricane conditions potentially hitting the state Wednesday.
The hurricane centers forecast for Ian has shown an unprecedented rate of strengthening from a tropical storm to powerful hurricane, CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said.

(1,967 posts)some of the warmest water in the Caribbean and GOM approaching mid to high 80s. The core is still slightly wobbling like a top but there is a small closed eye of about 20 miles wide from the aircraft currently flying the storm. The tip of Cuba won't interrupt this thing much if at all. This area is notorious for hurricanes to bomb. Rapid intensification models aren't letting up with pushing this to Cat 3 before Cuba. Intensity forecasts are the most difficult with our current technology. Most of the record holders for bombing out occur in this area. Not saying it will but this is the area we call the Cat 5 generator for a reason lol.

(5,702 posts)No. Hurricane Harvey in 1981 went from tropical depression to hurricane in 12 hours and a Cat 4 in less than 3 days.
Ian was a tropical depression on Sep 23, tropical storm on Sep 24, Cat 1 this morning and Cat 2 12 hours later. It may become a Cat 4 tomorrow night or early Wednesday.
And Wilma in 2005 and Felix in 2007 went from tropical depression to Cat 5 in 54 hours, with Wilma going from tropical storm to Cat 5 in only 24 hours.
CNN has to fire up the hyperbole to keep the viewers glued to their sets. I'm not downplaying this storm, it's a bad one, but the intensification has not been unprecedented.
