Senate rejects proposal to give rail workers seven days of paid sick leave
Source: The Hill
The Senate voted on Thursday to reject a proposal to give railway workers seven days of sick leave, a benefit that was left out of a labor deal brokered by the presidential emergency board between freight rail companies and unionized workers.
The proposal to give workers seven days of sick leave, which was championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and other liberal Democrats, failed to pick up enough Republican support to overcome a 60-vote threshold set for adopting the measure. It passed the House Wednesday with a narrow bipartisan majority, 221 to 207 with only three Republicans voting for it. The votes in the Senate and House now give Democrats the ability to blame Republicans for imposing a labor deal on rail workers that includes little flexibility for taking time off work due to illness or doctors’ visits. And the President needs to support them. 100%. Threaten to nationalize any RR that doesn't grant sick leave, and throw the executives in jail.
Fuck anyone who thinks that a *single worker* anywhere in the U.S.A. shouldn't have as much paid sick time as they need to stay healthy, may they know nothing but illness and injury for them and their family. I hope the workers throw a wrench in it; close *everything* down until the newest person gets 30 days. ONE worker is more important than all the asshole railroad executives, stock holders, and any POS politician that doesn't support the workers. |

The democratic senate and democratic house have joined forces to dump on a union. Presumably the democratic president will sign on next.
This will cost us in the next election and beyond. Unions are the main counterweight to the kochs and adelsons and such. And our party just proved we don't have their backs when the going looks a little rocky. |

The bill, which gives rail workers seven paid sick days, passed the House but was defeated by a vote of 52-43 in the Senate, as Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., joined Republican members in rejecting the measure. A handful of Republican members, including Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla, voted in favor of the bill.
